Common questions about this trip

  • How do I actually get to Fraser Island?

Two ways in: barge or ferry from River Heads near Hervey Bay, or from Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach. Different tour companies leave from different points — double-check which one yours uses when you book (we'll confirm it in the booking email).
  • Can I drive a 4WD on Fraser if I've never driven one before?

Yep, as long as you're 21+ with an open licence (no L or P plates). You'll get a thorough briefing the day before the trip — beach driving, tide windows, what to do if you get bogged. Tag-along tours mean a guide vehicle leads the convoy, so you're not solo.
  • Can I buy food on the island?

Yeah — a few shops, fuel stations and resort kiosks. Everything's marked up though (seller's market), so grab the bulk of your snacks/drinks at Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach before you board. Tour meals are included; the markup hits if you want extra beers or chocolate.
  • Are the dingoes dangerous?

They're wild animals — treat them like one. Don't approach, don't feed, don't pet (yes, people try). Your guides go through dingo safety in the briefing. Follow the rules and you'll see them from a safe distance and have a great story. Ignore the rules and you'll have a worse story.
  • What's the camping like?

Basic but legendary. Beach camp under the stars, communal dinner cooked together, swap stories around the fire. Bring a sleeping bag (or hire one for $20). Showers are limited — embrace it.
