Common questions about this trip

  • Are there marine stingers? Can I actually swim?

Yes, you can swim. We give everyone a full-length lycra stinger suit and you wear it during higher-risk months (Oct–May). It's also great sun protection — most travellers keep it on for the snorkel sessions year-round. Of the 8 million annual visitors to the Great Barrier Reef region, serious stinger incidents are rare. Follow the crew's call and you're sweet.
  • What's there to do in Airlie Beach if I arrive a day early?

Plenty. Saturday morning markets on the lagoon, the main strip for cheap eats and bars, hire a scooter and explore the Whitsunday Coast hinterland, or hit the free lagoon pool. A day either side of the sail is worth it.
  • How long does it take to get to the actual Great Barrier Reef?

About 2 hours by boat from Airlie Beach. You'll snorkel inner reef gardens on Day 1 (closer) and an outer reef stop on Day 3. If you want certified scuba diving on the outer reef itself, our [Great Barrier Reef Outer Dive Day](/tours/great-barrier-reef-dive-day) out of Cairns is the better option.
  • Can I bring a wheeled suitcase?

Soft duffel or backpack only, please. Tall ships have no spare room for hard cases. Leave your big bag at your Airlie Beach hostel reception ($5–10/day) and bring a small day-pack with swimmers, sunscreen, phone charger, change of clothes. That's all you need.
  • What about drinks on board?

BYO non-glass alcohol for the trip. The boat has a small fridge to chill it. No glass (safety on a moving boat) and no red wine (you don't want to know why). Soft drinks + water are stocked.
