Common questions about this trip

  • When's the best month?

Mid-July to mid-September is peak. The whales are migrating north (July) and back south (Sep-Oct) and you'll often see mothers with calves on the return leg. Outside Jun-Oct: no whales — they're in Antarctic waters.
  • Will I get seasick?

Maybe — it's a small boat in open ocean. Take a ginger tablet or seasickness band before boarding. Eat a light brekkie. Focus on the horizon, not the deck.
  • Not recommended if you're pregnant or have back injuries — why?

The boat smacks on swell. Sudden jolts. Not worth the risk for either. Plenty of whale-watching from Cape Byron lighthouse on land — free, beautiful, no jolts.
