Common questions about this trip

  • How long does it take to get to the actual reef?

About 1.5 hours by high-speed cat from the Cairns marina. We're back at the dock by 5pm, so it's a true full-day trip. The outer reef sites we visit are an hour further out than what most day-tour operators reach — better coral, fewer boats, bigger marine life.
  • Do I need to be dive-certified?

No. About half our travellers do an Intro Dive — full guidance from a dive instructor, no certification needed, max 12m depth. Snorkellers go in too (no charge for snorkel kit). Certified divers can do unguided dives. You can decide on the boat.
  • Will I get seasick?

Honestly? Some people do. The cat is fast but the reef is genuinely offshore. Take a ginger tablet or a seasickness band before boarding (the crew has spares — ask in the morning). Eat a light brekkie. Once you're in the water you'll forget the boat exists.
  • Best time of year for visibility?

May–October is dry season with the best underwater visibility (20–30m). Nov–April still good but can get murkier after heavy rain. Stingers are managed with full lycra suits year-round.
  • Is it true the reef is dying?

Parts of it have suffered bleaching events. But the outer reef sites we visit are still extraordinary — vibrant coral, turtles, reef sharks, the lot. Tourism operators (us included) follow strict reef-protection protocols. You're not making it worse by visiting; the tourism revenue funds conservation.
