Paraíso, pero con buena compañía

This is the one thing every Fiji backpacker does, and for good reason. Grab a Bula Pass, board the big yellow catamaran at Port Denarau and spend a week bouncing up the Yasawa chain, twenty-odd volcanic islands strung out over 80 kilometres of ridiculously clear water. Each stop is its own tiny world: a beach, a dorm, a dive shack, a kava circle. You wake up to reef fish under the jetty, spend the day snorkelling or doing absolutely nothing, then flag the boat down when you're ready for the next island. No itinerary stress. Just you, a dry bag, and a chain of islands that keeps getting better the further north you go.
Up near the top of the Yasawas sits the actual Blue Lagoon, yes, the one from the film, and it somehow beats the poster. The water shifts from glass-clear to electric turquoise over white sand, and the snorkelling straight off the beach is some of Fiji's best: coral bommies, parrotfish, the odd reef shark minding its own business. From here, day boats run to the Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves, where you swim into a sunlit chamber inside the rock, then duck underwater through a short tunnel into a second, darker cave. It's equal parts serene and slightly terrifying. Do both in one day and you've earnt your sunset beer.
Fiji rewards the curious. Between May and October, manta rays cruise the channel in the southern Yasawas, when the spotters call it, you drop in and snorkel alongside wings three metres across. Nothing prepares you for the first pass. Back on the mainland, the hills behind Nadi hide the Sabeto hot springs and mud pools (cover yourself, bake, rinse, repeat) and the orchid-filled Garden of the Sleeping Giant. Got a spare day? The Mamanuca islands are an easy hop, including Monuriki, the uninhabited speck where Tom Hanks filmed Cast Away. Wilson not included.
Fiji's social scene isn't a strip of clubs, it's a mat on the floor and a coconut shell of kava coming your way. Village visits and resort kava ceremonies are the real deal: clap once, drink it down, clap three times, feel your lips go pleasantly numb while the guitars and ukuleles start up. Island stays run on communal dinners, so you'll share a table with strangers on night one and travel with them by night three. Add beach bonfires, crab races, Sunday church singing that gives you goosebumps, and locals who yell "Bula!" like they mean it, because they do. Solo travellers don't stay solo here.
Comparing on price? Tours por Fiji, por precio: every one we sell, cheapest first, updated daily.
The Bula Pass gives you unlimited hop-on hop-off travel on the Yasawa Flyer, a catamaran that runs daily from Port Denarau through the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands and back. You pick which islands to stop at and how long to stay, then flag the Flyer when you're ready to move. Accommodation isn't included; the onboard travel desk books your beds as you go.
Bula Passes run from 5 to 15 days. The 5-day pass is A$399 per person, and longer passes cost more. Coach transfers from most Nadi, Denarau, Vuda and Wailoaloa hotels to Port Denarau are included.
May to October is the sweet spot, Fiji's dry season, with sunny days around 26°C, lower humidity and calmer seas for island-hopping. It's also manta ray season in the Yasawas. November to April is hotter, wetter and cyclone-prone, but quieter and cheaper if you're flexible and watching the forecast.
Seven days is the classic backpacker run, enough for a proper Yasawa island hop on a Bula Pass (passes run 5 to 15 days), hitting three or four islands without rushing. Ten days lets you add the Blue Lagoon, the Sawa-i-Lau caves and a mainland day around Nadi. Less than five and you'll wish you'd stayed.
Flights are cheap from Australia, but island life costs more than Southeast Asia because most island stays bundle compulsory meal plans, budget for that on top of your bed. Save money by booking a boat pass and accommodation together, carrying cash for villages, drinking kava instead of cocktails, and snorkelling free off the beach instead of paying for every tour.
Island-hop the Yasawas on a Bula Pass. It's beginner-friendly by design: one boat runs the whole chain daily, accommodation feeds you and hands you a snorkel, and every island has an easy reef straight off the sand. You don't need dive tickets, a licence or a plan, just togs, sunscreen and a loose schedule.
Fly into Nadi International Airport, direct flights run from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne and take roughly four hours. From Nadi it's a short transfer to Port Denarau marina, where the daily catamaran departs up the Yasawa and Mamanuca chains. Most travellers land, stay one night near Nadi, then catch the morning boat out.
One of the best places on earth for it. The Bula Pass funnels everyone onto the same boat route, island stays run communal dinners and kava circles, and Fijians treat strangers like returning family. You'll have a crew within 48 hours without trying. English is widely spoken and the islands feel genuinely safe and welcoming.
Manta rays are the headliner, from May to October they feed in the channels of the southern Yasawas, and snorkelling beside one is unforgettable. Year-round you'll spot sea turtles, reef sharks, and huge soft-coral gardens (Fiji is famous for them). Spinner dolphins often escort the boats, and the birdlife on the greener islands is loud and everywhere.
From the northern Yasawas, boat out to the Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves and swim between chambers inside the rock. From Nadi, hit the Sabeto mud pools and hot springs with the Garden of the Sleeping Giant next door. Or day-trip the Mamanucas for surf breaks, snorkelling and a look at Monuriki, the real Cast Away island.
