The wild north, Kakadu, gorges, Aboriginal Country
The Top End doesn't do subtle. Crocodiles launch themselves out of the Adelaide River, waterfalls thunder into swimmable plunge pools, and rock art galleries in Kakadu have been curated for tens of thousands of years. This is the Australia that documentaries are made about.

Kakadu isn't a park, it's a country, nearly 20,000 square kilometres of stone country, floodplain and monsoon forest about three hours' drive east of Darwin. The moment that gets everyone is Ubirr: you scramble up the rock past galleries of Aboriginal art painted over thousands of years, then the escarpment drops away and the Nadab floodplain rolls out green and gold to the horizon. Time it for sunset and just sit there. Add a Yellow Water billabong cruise at dawn, crocs, jabirus, sea eagles, and you'll get why people say the East Coast is the holiday but Kakadu is Australia.
Litchfield National Park is the Top End's great equaliser, about an hour and a half from Darwin, and every stop is a swim. Start at Buley Rockhole, a staircase of natural spa pools where you claim a hole and refuse to leave. Walk the short track down to Florence Falls, a double waterfall crashing into a deep, clear plunge pool ringed by monsoon forest. Wangi Falls is the big finisher, wide and lazy with room for everyone. Between swims you'll pass the magnetic termite mounds, hundreds of two-metre towers all aligned north to south. Bring thongs you can hike in and a towel that dries fast.
Push down the Stuart Highway and the Top End keeps giving. Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) is three hours south, thirteen sandstone gorges you can canoe or cruise. Another hour on, Mataranka's thermal pools sit at a constant, glassy 34 degrees under a canopy of livistona palms; floating there after a dusty drive is close to a religious experience. This is also where the Savannah Way starts making sense, the overland route running east from Darwin all the way to Cairns. Our 11-Day Savannah Way Explorer does the full crossing, hitting the gulf country and outback most backpackers never see from a plane window.
Darwin's social calendar runs on the sun going down. Thursday and Sunday evenings in the dry, half the city hauls eskies and picnic rugs to Mindil Beach for the sunset markets, a bowl of laksa in one hand, mango smoothie in the other, while the sky over the Arafura Sea does something unreasonable in orange. When the light's gone, everyone drifts to Mitchell Street, the compact backpacker strip where the hostels, pubs and late-night feeds all sit within a stumble of each other. It's a small city, so you'll re-meet the crew from your Kakadu trip by Friday. That's the charm.
Comparing on price? Tours por Darwin y el Top End, por precio: every one we sell, cheapest first, updated daily.

Darwin to Adelaide crosses the whole country, via Katherine, Uluru and the outback. The van is your transport and your bed, so two people split one price.
From A$70 a night for two, bed included: Sydney to Brisbane, 7 nights (10–17 Nov 2026), A$490 all-in on the company's own website when we checked on 22 October 2026.
May to October, the dry season. Expect sunny 30-degree days, low humidity, swimmable waterfalls and the Mindil Beach sunset markets in full swing. November to April is the wet: hot, humid and stormy, with some parks and swimming holes closed by flooding and crocs. The build-up (Oct–Nov) is spectacular for lightning but hard work for sightseeing.
Five to seven days covers the essentials: a day or two in Darwin itself, a day trip to Litchfield, and two to three days in Kakadu. Add Katherine Gorge and Mataranka and you're at a week-plus. If you're heading east anyway, the 11-day Savannah Way overland to Cairns turns the Top End into the trip rather than a stopover.
Mid-range by Australian standards. Hostel beds and pub meals cost about what you'd pay in Cairns. The savings are in the doing: Litchfield's swimming holes are free once you're there, Mindil Markets dinner is cheap and huge, and happy hours on Mitchell Street are generous. The big cost is distance, join a group tour to Kakadu to split it, since car hire plus park fees adds up fast solo.
Sunset at Ubirr in Kakadu National Park. You walk up through ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, then watch the light flood the Nadab floodplain from the top of the escarpment, it's the single best moment in northern Australia. If you're short on time, a Litchfield waterfall day trip from Darwin is the easiest big win and perfect for first-timers.
Fly, Darwin Airport has direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Cairns, and it's one of Australia's main gateways to Asia. Overland, the Stuart Highway runs about 1,500 km up from Alice Springs, and the Savannah Way connects Darwin to Cairns across the gulf country. There's no coastal highway shortcut; the distances up here are real, so plan them.
One of the best spots in Australia for it. The hostel scene is concentrated around Mitchell Street, everyone's passing through on the same loop, and multi-day Kakadu and Litchfield tours bond a group fast, three days sharing swimming holes and campfire dinners beats a week of small talk. Mindil Markets is an easy, zero-pressure place to meet people on your first night.
Saltwater crocodiles are the headline, you'll spot them safely from a Yellow Water or Adelaide River cruise, never from the water's edge. Beyond crocs: wallabies, dingoes, frilled lizards, and serious birdlife, jabirus, brolgas, sea eagles and thousands of magpie geese on Kakadu's floodplains. In the dry season, shrinking billabongs concentrate everything, which makes May to October prime wildlife-watching.
Litchfield National Park is the classic, about 90 minutes each way for a full day of waterfall swims at Buley Rockhole, Florence Falls and Wangi Falls. A jumping-crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River is a solid half-day. Kakadu is doable as a long day trip, but it deserves two to three days; Katherine Gorge and Mataranka's thermal pools work best as an overnight run south.
