Sydney to Cairns is the route. Roughly 2,600 km of coast road strung together by hostels, sailing boats, 4WDs and a rotating cast of new mates. You start with a harbour ferry and a Bondi swim, learn to surf in Byron Bay, tear up a sand highway on K'gari, sail the Whitsundays, then finish by dropping onto the Great Barrier Reef out of Cairns. Nobody does it the same way twice, some smash it in a fortnight, some stretch it over a working-holiday year. Either way, the East Coast Australia backpacker trail earns its reputation the smart way: it's just that good.
These are the stops most backpackers plan the trip around, south to north, with the nights we suggest on a four-week trip.
1. Sydney (3 nights). The harbour ferry to Manly, the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk and a day in the Blue Mountains. Many working holiday makers land here and sort their bank account, phone and tax file number first.
2. Byron Bay (3 nights). The easiest place on the coast to learn to surf, the walk up to the lighthouse for sunrise, and a big, social hostel scene.
3. Noosa (3 nights). Noosa National Park's coastal walk, the Noosa Everglades by canoe or kayak, and gentle longboard waves on Main Beach.
4. K'gari (Fraser Island), from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay (2 nights). The world's largest sand island, done on a 4WD tag-along: Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the Maheno shipwreck, camping on the beach. For a lot of people it's the highlight of the whole trip.
5. Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays (5 nights, including 2 on a boat). Sailing the Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and snorkelling on the fringing reef. Airlie's lagoon and nightlife fill the nights either side.
6. Magnetic Island, via Townsville (3 nights). Wild koalas on the Forts Walk, rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay and quiet bays you can reach on foot or by hire car.
7. Mission Beach (2 nights). A long, palm-lined beach between the rainforest and the reef, and one of the best-known skydives on the coast.
8. Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef (3 nights). A day on the outer reef snorkelling or diving, the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation, and the end-of-trip celebration on the Esplanade.
Worth adding if you have time: Port Macquarie or Coffs Harbour between Sydney and Byron, the Gold Coast or Brisbane for a night, and Agnes Water and 1770 for a first surf lesson on quieter waves. Our Sydney to Cairns guide has the nights per stop for three and four weeks, and the free trip planner turns any of these into one plan with one all-in price.
Set an alarm you'll actually keep. The Cape Byron walking track climbs from the beach to the lighthouse on mainland Australia's most easterly point, about 3.7 km of rainforest, cliff line and ocean lookouts. Time it for dawn and you'll catch the first sunlight to hit the country, often with dolphins in the swell below and humpbacks cruising past between June and November. Back down at The Pass, longboarders queue for one of the most forgiving right-handers anywhere, grab a foamie and join them. Then coffee, bakery, beach. That's a Byron morning done properly.
These are the trips people fly home still talking about. On K'gari (Fraser Island), you drive a 4WD down 75 Mile Beach, an actual gazetted highway made of sand, swim in the ridiculous blue of Lake McKenzie, soak in the Champagne Pools and pull up beside the rusting Maheno shipwreck. A few hundred kilometres north, you swap sand for sails: two nights sleeping on deck in the Whitsundays, snorkelling straight off the boat and standing on the swirled white silica of Whitehaven Beach. Both run tagalong-and-crew style, so you rock up solo and leave with a group chat.
Here's the secret: the East Coast isn't really about the sights, it's about who you meet between them. Hostel kitchens in Sydney's Surry Hills, sunset drum circles on Byron's Main Beach, hostel card games in Airlie Beach, the lagoon crowd and night markets in Cairns, the trail has built-in gathering points every stop of the way. Because everyone's moving the same direction, you'll bump into the same faces from Nimbin to the Northern Beaches to the Whitsundays marina. Travel solo, and by week two you've got a crew. That's the whole point, the freedom of solo, the crew of a group.
There's no single right way to do Sydney to Cairns, so here's how the main styles compare.
Our Travel Mates semi-guided trips give you a set itinerary with the bookings done for you, a flexible start date, and guides on the big days like K'gari and the Whitsundays. You travel solo and make mates along the way through social hostels and the group tours. Trips run from 14 to 33 days, start from A$2,599, and go ahead even if you're the only one who booked your start date.
Prefer a group the whole way? Fully guided group tours with fixed departures run from 10 to 28 days, starting from A$1.199 for a 10-day Sydney to Brisbane run.
Short on time? The K'gari and Whitsundays combo packs Queensland's two icons into a week from A$1.499. Or tell us your dates and we'll build your own route from the tours on this site, with one all-in quote.
Here's how a classic month from Sydney to Cairns usually unfolds.
Week one: Sydney for the harbour, Bondi and the coastal walk to Coogee, then north to Byron Bay for surf lessons and the lighthouse walk.
Week two: cross into Queensland. Surf and the Noosa National Park walk, then out to K'gari for a few days of 4WD tracks, Lake McKenzie and nights under the stars.
Week three: the Whitsundays. Base yourself in Airlie Beach and spend two nights sailing the islands, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet included.
Week four: finish in the tropical north. Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef, plus side trips to the Daintree Rainforest or the waterfalls of the Atherton Tablelands.
Got two weeks instead? Start in Brisbane and you can still fit K'gari, the Whitsundays and the reef.
Head north in the cooler months if you can. Travelling up from May to September follows the sunshine into Queensland's dry season, which is peak time for the reef and the Whitsundays.
Book the big-ticket trips ahead in peak season. K'gari tag-alongs and Whitsundays sailing boats regularly sell out in school holidays and over summer, so lock those in first and build the rest of your route around them.
You don't need a car: hop-on-hop-off bus passes, campervans and the tours themselves cover the whole route. On a working holiday visa? Plenty of travellers fund the trip as they go with hostel, hospitality or farm work along the coast. Visa rules have changed recently, so check the current requirements before you plan work around your route.

A campervan lets you stop at any beach and add the big tours where a van can't go: K'gari, the Whitsundays and the Reef. The van is your transport and your bed, so two people split one price.
From A$69 a night for two, bed included: Sydney to Cairns, 14 nights (10–24 Nov 2026), A$959 all-in on the company's own website when we checked on 22 October 2026.
Sydney, Byron Bay, Noosa, K'gari (Fraser Island, from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay), Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, Magnetic Island, Mission Beach and Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef. On a four-week trip that's roughly 3 nights in Sydney, 3 in Byron, 3 in Noosa, 2 on K'gari, 5 in Airlie including 2 on a Whitsundays boat, 3 on Magnetic Island, 2 in Mission Beach and 3 in Cairns. Wanderlust plans and books the whole route for free at wanderlusttravel.com.au/plan-my-trip.
April to November is the sweet spot. The tropical north (Airlie Beach, Cairns) hits its dry season, sunny, low humidity, and stinger-free swimming without a suit. Sydney and Byron are great year-round, warmest December to February. Avoid the far north's wet season (roughly December to March) if reef days and K'gari camping are your priorities.
Three to four weeks is the classic. Fourteen days is the realistic minimum to cover Sydney, Byron Bay, K'gari, the Whitsundays and Cairns without sprinting. Our itineraries run from 14-day semi-guided trips up to the 33-day East Coast Classic, and working-holiday travellers often stretch the route across months, working along the way.
Australia isn't Southeast Asia, but it's manageable. Budget roughly A$70–100 AUD a day: hostel dorms, hostel-kitchen cooking, free beaches and coastal walks keep costs down, while the big-ticket items (Whitsundays sailing, K'gari 4WD, reef dives) are worth saving for. Booking activities as a bundle beats paying walk-up rates, and hostel kitchens are your best friend.
If you only do one thing, sail the Whitsundays, two days and two nights on a boat, snorkelling off the back deck and walking Whitehaven Beach's white silica sand. Close second: diving or snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns. Neither needs experience; intro dives and guided snorkels are built for total beginners.
Fly into Sydney, Brisbane or Cairns, all major international airports, and travel between them however suits: Greyhound hop-on-hop-off buses run the whole coast, budget flights (Sydney–Cairns is about 3 hours) skip the long hauls, and plenty of travellers share campervans. Most do it south to north, Sydney to Cairns, following the warm weather.
It's arguably the best solo route on the planet. Everyone travels the same corridor in the same direction, hostels are social by design, and the big experiences, K'gari 4WD tagalongs, Whitsundays boats, reef trips, are group-based by nature. Turning up alone is completely normal; staying alone is basically impossible.
Humpback whales migrate up the coast June to November, visible from Byron's lighthouse headland or Hervey Bay. On the reef, expect sea turtles, reef sharks and parrotfish year-round, with the best visibility June to October. K'gari has wild dingoes (admire, never feed), and the Daintree near Cairns hides cassowaries and crocs, the crocs are exactly why you obey the swim signs.
From Sydney: the Blue Mountains or a Manly ferry day. From Byron: Nimbin and the hinterland waterfalls. From Brisbane: Moreton Island sand-boarding or Australia Zoo. From Cairns, you're spoiled, outer reef snorkel days, the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, Atherton Tablelands waterfalls, or white-water rafting the Tully. Most run as easy one-day returns.
A group tour keeps you with the same guide and group the whole way, on fixed departure dates. Our semi-guided trips give you a set itinerary with everything booked, a flexible start date and guides on the big days like K'gari and the Whitsundays, while you travel more independently and meet people along the way.
Most people go north, Sydney to Cairns. It follows the warmer weather, especially from May to September, and finishes on a high at the Great Barrier Reef. Going south works too, but north is the classic for a reason.
Book the big trips like K'gari tag-alongs and Whitsundays sailing in advance during school holidays and summer, as they often sell out. Hostels and day tours can usually be booked closer to the time.
Many working holiday travellers pick up hostel, hospitality or farm work along the way to fund the trip. Visa rules have changed recently, so check the current requirements for your visa before planning work around your route.
