The Grampians reward the small vehicle: a minibus fits the lookout car parks the coaches fight over, and a group this size moves at conversation pace rather than headcount pace.

The day runs the range's essentials properly. Boroka Lookout serves the enormous view over Halls Gap and the plains beyond. MacKenzie Falls involves the full 400-step descent to the base, your knees will file a complaint, and the thundering close-up will overrule it. The Aboriginal Culture Centre adds the human history that gives these mountains their depth, and there's free time in Halls Gap village for lunch and a wander, quite possibly with kangaroos loitering nearby, they treat the town as theirs.
