The companies with a limit are JUCY and Star RV (drivers under 75), Campervan Village in Australia (75), Travellers Autobarn (80), Camperman (85) and Awesome Campers (86). Let’s Go Motorhomes and TREK give a minimum age (21 and 18) but no maximum in their terms. The limit applies to every driver, so if one of you is 76, a JUCY van is out even if the other is 70.
When you book with us, the quote page shows the company’s age rule before you pay. If a driver’s date of birth is over the limit, the driver form stops and we move you to a company without one.
Which van is the comfortable choice for two?
A 2-berth with its own toilet and shower, an automatic gearbox and a proper double bed. These are the ones we have checked against each company’s own vehicle page:

Two things matter more than people expect. First, a bed you don’t have to build every night: in most 2-berths the dinette turns into the bed, which is fine for a week and tiresome after three. The Jayco Atlas keeps its bed made up, and the Roamer’s bed lifts out of the way electrically. Second, standing headroom: the Maui Ultima, the Jayco vans and the Mighty Duo all have about 1.9m or more inside.
Let’s Go says all its campervans and motorhomes are automatic, and so does Awesome Campers. A 3-berth such as the Mighty Deuce Plus or Maui Ultima Plus adds a small single bed, which many couples use for luggage.
What does a long one-way trip cost?
Longer hires bring the daily rate down, and the one-way fee is a one-off. As an example, 24 days from Auckland to Christchurch in a Mighty Deuce, picking up on 13 November 2026, came to A$5,299 on Wanderlust Travel, quoted on 2 November. That included the one-way fee, standard cover with a NZ$5,000 bond held on the card at pick-up, linen, bedding and the kitchen kit. About A$221 a day for two people, with your bed, bathroom and kitchen along the way.

Do older drivers need anything extra?
For a visitor, the rental company’s own age rule is the one that matters. New Zealand’s transport agency asks visitors for a current, valid licence, with an English translation or an International Driving Permit if it isn’t in English. From 1 November 2026 you can drive on it for 12 months from your last arrival. The medical certificates at 75 and 80 in New Zealand apply when renewing a New Zealand licence. We found no extra step for older visitors on a foreign licence in the official pages we read, in New Zealand or Queensland.
What we would add:
- Bring the physical licence, and an International Driving Permit if yours isn’t in English. Everyone who will drive must come to the pick-up with their licence.
- Plan for the bond. Basic cover holds a bond of several thousand dollars on a credit card (NZ$5,000 on the Mighty Deuce above). Reduced or zero-excess cover lowers it. Seguro y depósito de garantía de la campervan: todo explicado compares the options.
- Drive shorter days. Two to three hours of driving a day leaves time to stop. New Zealand roads are slower than the map suggests.

Put your dates into the live search: pick-up, drop-off, how many people. You see current prices from the rental companies, with the one-way fee in, and the price holds for 24 hours. When you book online, your card is only charged once the rental company confirms the van, usually within 24 hours. After paying you add the driver details: names as on the licence, dates of birth and licence numbers.

The age rules we read are cut-offs, and none of them mentioned an extra charge for older drivers. In our quotes the price depends on the van and dates, not your age.
Which campervan is easiest to drive?
A 2-berth van such as the Mighty Deuce or Apollo Euro Tourer: automatic, and about the size of a large delivery van. Bigger 4 to 6-berth motorhomes are slower on hills and harder to park.
