About picking up in Hobart

Tasmania is the most campervan-friendly state, small distances, abundant free camps, and you'll often have a national park to yourself. Hobart is the southern launchpad; Launceston the northern.

Hobart is where almost every Tasmania campervan trip starts. Spaceships, Mighty, Apollo, Britz and Maui all rent from here; JUCY and Awesome Campers do not have a Tasmanian depot. Picking up and dropping off in Hobart means no one-way fee, and the classic loop of the island is about 1,200 km over 12 days.

Season moves the price more than anything else. For a 12-night Hobart round trip checked on 29 October 2026, the cheapest van was A$1.105 in June, A$2.084 in November and A$2.197 in January, when the cheapest vans were already on request only. A motorhome with a shower and toilet started at A$2.119 in June and A$3.081 in January.

Distances are short but the roads are slow: narrow, winding and full of wildlife at dusk. Plan on 60 to 70 km/h averages and a smaller van is easier on the mountain roads to Cradle and Strahan.

Campervan hire in Hobart: common questions

How much does campervan hire in Tasmania cost? +

For a 12-night Hobart round trip, the cheapest van was A$1.105 in June 2027, A$2.084 in November 2026 and A$2.197 in January 2027 (operator website prices, checked 29 October 2026). A Mighty Duo motorhome was A$2.119 in June and A$3.081 in January. Your dates set the real figure, which our quote shows.

Which campervan companies have a depot in Hobart? +

Spaceships, Mighty, Apollo, Britz and Maui. JUCY and Awesome Campers do not rent in Tasmania, so if you see their names on a Tasmania search, check the pick-up city.

Is it cheaper to bring a campervan over on the Spirit of Tasmania? +

Usually not. You pay the vehicle fare both ways on top of the extra hire days spent on the ferry. A Hobart round trip has no one-way fee and starts where the flights land.

Do I need a 4WD in Tasmania? +

No. The loop through Freycinet, the Bay of Fires, Cradle Mountain and Strahan is sealed. A 2WD campervan does it, and the rental terms of most standard vans do not allow unsealed roads anyway.

When is the best time to hire a campervan in Tasmania? +

November to April for long, mild days. December and January are the most expensive and book out first. Winter is roughly half the price, but expect snow at Cradle Mountain and short days.
