Campervan Hire in Tasmania 2026: Real Prices from Hobart and a 12-Day Loop

What a campervan or motorhome really costs in Tasmania by season, which companies rent from Hobart, and a 12-day loop of the island with drive times.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: a 12-night campervan loop from Hobart cost $1,105 in June 2027, $2,084 in November 2026 and $2,197 in January 2027 for the cheapest van we could find, checked on the operators’ own websites on 29 October 2026. A Mighty Duo motorhome with a shower and toilet was $2,119, $2,504 and $3,081 for the same dates. Spaceships, Mighty, Apollo, Britz and Maui rent from Hobart; JUCY and Awesome Campers do not have a Tasmanian depot. Start and finish in Hobart so there is no one-way fee, allow 10 to 14 days for the full loop, and book December and January early. The free quote shows the real price for your dates. Booking through us is never dearer than booking direct.

How much does a campervan cost in Tasmania?

Hobart round trip, 12 nights, driver aged 26, two adults. Each figure is the operator’s website total for the whole hire, including compulsory fees and the basic included cover.

DatesCheapest vanHi-top campervanMotorhome
10 to 22 Nov 2026$2,084 (Mighty Highball)$2,244 (Apollo Hitop)$2,504 (Mighty Duo)
5 to 17 Jan 2027$2,197 (Spaceships Beta, on request)$2,644 (Mighty Highball)$3,081 (Mighty Duo)
8 to 20 Jun 2027$1,105 (Spaceships Beta)$1,690 (Mighty Highball)$2,119 (Mighty Duo)

That works out at roughly $92 a night in winter and $175 to $185 a night in spring and summer for the cheapest van. Three things stand out:

  • Winter is about half price. The same Spaceships van was $1,105 in June against $2,197 in January.
  • Budget vans are thin on the ground. Spaceships had nothing for our November dates and only on-request vans in January. The cheap people-mover campers that dominate the mainland (JUCY, Awesome Campers) are not in Tasmania at all. Book early if budget matters.
  • The motorhome step is small. The Mighty Duo was $420 to $437 more than the Mighty Highball over 12 nights, about $36 a night, for a shower and toilet on board. In a Tasmanian winter, that is worth a look. More on the trade-off in campervan vs motorhome.

On the mainland, the same kind of van is cheaper: a Spaceships Alpha was $959 for 14 nights Sydney to Cairns in November. Tasmania’s fleet is small and demand peaks hard in summer. Our campervan hire cost guide has the mainland numbers.

Which companies rent campervans in Tasmania?

If a comparison site shows you a JUCY or Awesome Campers van “in Tasmania”, check the pick-up city. Full terms for each company are on rental companies compared.

Should you bring a van over on the Spirit of Tasmania?

Usually not. If you already have a mainland hire, taking it on the ferry from Geelong means paying the vehicle fare each way, losing hire days to the crossing, and checking that your rental company allows it at all. A Hobart round trip has no one-way fee, starts where the flights land, and keeps the whole hire on the island. The ferry makes sense if you own the vehicle, or are on a long mainland trip with a company that permits the crossing.

The 12-day Tasmania loop

About 1,200 km, Hobart to Hobart, sealed the whole way. Full stop-by-stop detail, map and van suggestions are on the Tasmania loop route page.

  • Days 1 to 2: Hobart and Bruny Island. Salamanca on a Saturday, MONA, and the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Day trip to Bruny for sea cliffs and seals.
  • Day 3: Port Arthur (1.5 hrs, 95 km). Convict ruins by day, the lantern ghost tour at night, Tessellated Pavement on the way.
  • Days 4 to 5: Freycinet and Coles Bay (3 hrs, 210 km). Wineglass Bay lookout, then down to the beach itself.
  • Day 6: Bay of Fires (2 hrs, 120 km). Orange lichen, white granite and free beachfront camping.
  • Day 7: Launceston (2.5 hrs, 170 km). Cataract Gorge, then the Tamar Valley wineries.
  • Days 8 to 9: Cradle Mountain (2 hrs, 150 km). Dove Lake circuit, wombats at dusk, Marions Lookout if you have the legs.
  • Day 10: Strahan (2 hrs, 150 km). Gordon River cruise and sunset on Ocean Beach.
  • Days 11 to 12: Lake St Clair and back to Hobart (1.5 hrs, then 2.5 hrs). Australia’s deepest lake, Russell Falls at Mt Field, van back in Hobart.

Short on time? Seven days covers Hobart, Freycinet, the Bay of Fires and Launceston on the east coast, then straight back down the Midland Highway.

Tips that save money and stress in Tasmania

  • Buy the Parks & Wildlife Holiday Pass. Every national park needs a pass, and the Holiday Pass covers all of them for up to two months.
  • Drive slower than the map says. Roads are narrow and winding. Plan on 60 to 70 km/h averages and avoid driving at dusk, when wildlife is on the road.
  • Use the free camps. Tasmania has some of the best free camping in the country, the Bay of Fires included. Our Tasmania free camping guide lists sites and their facilities.
  • Pick the smallest van you can sleep in. The roads to Cradle Mountain and Strahan are easier in a hi-top than in a long motorhome.
  • Winter means snow at Cradle. June to August is half the price, but the days are short and some walks close. Pack for it, or take the motorhome.
  • No 4WD needed. Every stop on the loop is on sealed roads, and most standard rental vans are not permitted on unsealed roads anyway.

FAQs

What is the cheapest month to hire a campervan in Tasmania? June to August. Our June 2027 check was $1,105 for 12 nights, about half the January price.

How many days do you need in Tasmania by campervan? Ten to fourteen for the full loop. Seven days covers the east coast properly.

Can I pick up in Hobart and drop off in Launceston? Ask for it in your quote. A Hobart round trip is the simplest and has no one-way fee, which is why we price the loop that way.

Is a motorhome worth it in Tasmania? In winter, or with kids, often yes: the Mighty Duo was about $36 a night more than the Highball on every date we checked. In summer, a campervan and the caravan park showers do the job.
