The route

Brisbane to Sydney is the short version of the East Coast, and it packs a lot into a week. Byron Bay comes first, then the coast runs south through the beaches and headlands of northern NSW: banana country at Coffs Harbour, koalas in Port Macquarie and the giant dunes of Port Stephens, before the drive ends in Sydney. The days are short, so there's time to surf, swim and stop wherever looks good.

    Byron Bay

    Sunrise at the lighthouse, the most easterly point on the mainland, then a surf lesson at The Pass. Spend the second day kayaking with the bay's resident dolphins or swimming under Minyon Falls.

    Coffs Harbour

    Walk out to Muttonbird Island at sunset, take the obligatory Big Banana photo, and fill up on cheap tropical fruit at the roadside stalls.

    Coastal walk from Town Beach to Lighthouse Beach, then the koala hospital, where the patients are very real and very sleepy.

    Port Stephens

    Dolphins in the bay and the Stockton sand dunes, the largest moving coastal sand mass in the southern hemisphere. Sandboard down them, then wash off at One Mile Beach.
