About picking up in Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is the nearest pickup to Byron Bay, about an hour south, and an easy fly-in start thanks to the airport at Coolangatta. Depots sit close to the airport and Surfers Paradise, with quick access south to Byron or north toward Brisbane and the tropics.
The Gold Coast is the smart pickup if Byron is your real start, since the depots sit an hour north of it and minutes from Coolangatta airport. Fly in, collect, and you are on the sand at Byron the same afternoon.
North is the whole tropical run: Noosa, Rainbow Beach and K'gari, the Whitsundays and on to Cairns in about two weeks. South is the short, scenic hop over the border into Byron and the northern rivers.
Because it doubles as the Byron pickup, one-way deals in both directions pass through here. If your dates are flexible, ask about relocations.

Campervan hire in Gold Coast: common questions
Is the Gold Coast a good pickup for Byron Bay? +
Yes, it is the closest depot to Byron, about an hour north, and the airport is 45 minutes away. Most Byron campervan trips actually start here.
Can I do a one-way rental from the Gold Coast? +
Yes. North to Cairns or south to Sydney are both standard. We build the one-way fee into your quote up front.
How old do I need to be to hire? +
Most operators rent to drivers 21 and over, with some accepting 18 to 20 for a surcharge. We quote only vans your age qualifies for.
Can I take the van onto K'gari (Fraser Island)? +
No. Campervans are not insured for sand driving, so leave the van at Rainbow Beach up the coast and take a 4WD tour across.
When is it cheapest? +
The shoulder months either side of summer are the best value. December and January are peak on the Gold Coast and book out early.
