Campervan hire prices in New Zealand
Short answer: Two weeks in a New Zealand campervan cost from NZ$511 in winter (8–22 Jun 2027, JUCY Cloudbreak, Christchurch return) on the rental companies' own websites, about NZ$37 a night. The same South Island loop was from NZ$2,706 in January and NZ$3,395 in mid-November, when no 2-berth hi-top was bookable and only bigger vans were left. Going one way from Auckland to Christchurch added about NZ$215 over a Christchurch return in winter. Fuel, campsites, the Cook Strait ferry and excess reduction are extra. We quote your dates live.

Mid-November was the surprise: two weeks out, every 2-berth hi-top on the South Island and one-way routes was gone, and the cheapest van left was a 4 to 6-berth. Book spring and summer early.

For 14 nights we found campervans from NZ$511 in winter and NZ$2,706 in the January peak, on the operators' own websites, NZD, basic cover and one-way fees included. A 2-berth hi-top (MightyLITE HiLITE) was NZ$1,207 in June and NZ$4,675 in January for a Christchurch return. Motorhomes with a toilet and shower started at NZ$1,762 in June.
When is the cheapest time to hire a campervan in New Zealand?
Winter (June to August), then autumn (April and May). A Christchurch return in a 2-berth hi-top was NZ$1,207 in June, NZ$2,270 in April and NZ$4,675 in January.
Should I book a New Zealand campervan early?
Yes, for spring and summer. Checked on 26 October 2026 for a 10 November pick-up, 11 of 34 vans on the Auckland to Christchurch route were already sold out or on request, including every 2-berth hi-top. The cheapest van left was NZ$4,035 for two weeks, against NZ$726 for the same trip in June.
Is a one-way campervan in New Zealand more expensive?
A little. In June, 14 nights Auckland to Christchurch was from NZ$726 against NZ$511 for a Christchurch return in the same van. Christchurch to Auckland (north) was NZ$537. One-way lets you see both islands without driving back.
Is the Interislander ferry included in campervan hire?
No. The Cook Strait ferry between Wellington and Picton is booked separately, for the van and each passenger.
What else costs extra?
Fuel, campsites or holiday parks, excess reduction (the basic cover leaves a high bond) and the ferry. Freedom camping on council land needs a certified self-contained vehicle.
