Short answer: the cheapest campervan we found in New Zealand was JUCY’s 2-berth Crib, NZ$42 a day (NZ$292 for 7 nights, Auckland return, 8 to 15 June 2027) on JUCY’s own website. Through Wanderlust, JUCY’s Cloudbreak was NZ$63 a day in April and the Crib NZ$67 a day one way from Auckland to Christchurch in June, both below JUCY’s own price. The cheapest self-contained van that can freedom camp, JUCY’s Chaser, was NZ$102 a day in June. In November budget 2-berths were NZ$98 to NZ$113 a day; in summer, book early.
These are real all-in quotes from 28 October 2026, not “from” rates: van, compulsory fees, one-way fee and basic cover included, 7 nights, 2 adults, driver aged 26. “A day” is the total divided by the nights. We price in Australian dollars, so each NZ$ figure is converted at the 27 October rate (A$1 = NZ$1.2331), with the A$ total beside it. Get live prices for your dates.

The brand’s price is the operator’s own website for JUCY, MightyLITE and Mighty (MightyLITE and Mighty from our 14-night check of 26 October). For Spaceships and Campervan Village it is the brand’s listed retail rate in the booking system we sell them through. Spaceships returned no June van in our check, so its row is November. MightyLITE and Mighty are “ask us”: we had no bookable rate for them on these dates, so send us your dates and we’ll quote them.
Lowest prices we saw: JUCY’s own website had the Crib at NZ$42 a day (A$237 for the week) for an Auckland return in June, and NZ$59 a day (A$334) for an Auckland return in mid-January. Ask us for those dates and we’ll get you the best price we can.
What about Escape, Lucky and Travellers Autobarn?
These three show up in most “cheap campervan NZ” lists. Travellers Autobarn NZ is on our booking system but returned no available van on any of our dates. We don’t sell Escape or Lucky. Whoever you compare, look at the all-in total, not the headline rate: Escape caps its one-way fee at $300, Lucky charges $349 southbound, and both sell $0-bond cover for about $30 a day. Policies, bonds and minimum ages for all of them are in the best campervan companies in New Zealand.
How much does the season change the price?
Cheapest JUCY 2-berth, 7 nights, all in:
| Dates | Where | A day | Through us |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17–24 Nov 2026 | Auckland or Christchurch return | NZ$98 | A$559 (JUCY’s own: A$587) |
| 17–24 Nov 2026 | Auckland to Christchurch | NZ$187 | A$1,059 (JUCY’s own: A$1,115) |
| 12–19 Jan 2027 | Auckland return | NZ$59 | ask us (JUCY’s own: A$334) |
| 12–19 Jan 2027 | Christchurch return | NZ$80 | ask us (JUCY’s own: A$456) |
| 13–20 Apr 2027 | Christchurch return | NZ$63 | A$359 (JUCY’s own: A$376) |
| 8–15 Jun 2027 | Auckland to Christchurch | NZ$67 | A$379 (JUCY’s own: A$390) |
| 8–15 Jun 2027 | Auckland return | NZ$42 | ask us (JUCY’s own: A$237) |
| 8–15 Jun 2027 | Queenstown return | NZ$162 | A$919 (JUCY’s own: A$973) |
Three things stand out. Winter and autumn are the cheapest. November is dearer than January for a return trip, because spring stock was already thin when we checked. And Queenstown cost more than double Auckland or Christchurch for the same week, so start your trip at one of those two.
How do I get a cheap campervan in New Zealand?
- Go in winter or autumn. June and April were the cheapest months in every city we checked.
- Pick up in Auckland or Christchurch. Queenstown was NZ$162 a day in June against NZ$42 to NZ$72 in Auckland and Christchurch.
- Check one way both ways. In June, Auckland to Christchurch (NZ$67 a day, fee included) was cheaper than a Christchurch return (NZ$72 for the Crib). In November it cost almost double a return.
- Pick a basic 2-berth if you’ll use campgrounds. The Crib and Cloudbreak have no toilet, so they can’t freedom camp on council land. A self-contained van with a fixed toilet and a green warrant (the JUCY Chaser, Spaceships Beta 2S, Campervan Village Aventus) costs about NZ$30 to NZ$90 a day more, which a week of free camps can win back.
- Price the bond. Basic cover leaves you liable for $3,000 to $7,500. Cutting the Crib’s bond to $0 added A$326 to the week in our June quote.
- Book spring and summer early. Three weeks out, November small vans were close to sold out in our checks.
- Add the ferry. Driving both islands means the Interislander or Bluebridge for the van and each passenger, booked separately.
