Short answer: the best New Zealand campervan company depends on your age, your route and whether you want to freedom camp. Spaceships suits drivers from 18 and anyone going one way, because it charges no one-way fee between Auckland and Christchurch. JUCY had the lowest prices we found: 14 nights from Christchurch was NZ$725 in April and NZ$511 in June. Escape and Lucky have the cheapest cover, $0 bond for $30 a day. Mighty’s MightyLITE HiLITE was the cheapest hi-top. If you want to camp free on council land, you need a van with a fixed toilet and a green self-containment warrant, and most of the cheapest 2-berth vans do not have one.
Prices below are the operators’ own website totals in NZD for 14 nights, 2 adults, checked 26 October 2026. Policies are from each company’s own website, read 27 October 2026. Want us to do the comparing? Send us your dates and we’ll quote the brands we can book for you, with no booking fee.
What did a New Zealand campervan cost in our check?
Cheapest bookable van on the operators’ websites, 14 nights, Christchurch return:
| Dates | Cheapest campervan | Cheapest 2-berth hi-top | Cheapest motorhome (toilet and shower) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10–24 Nov 2026 | NZ$4,071 (JUCY Condo) | none bookable | NZ$3,395 (Star RV Polaris 6) |
| 5–19 Jan 2027 | NZ$2,706 (JUCY Crib) | NZ$4,675 (MightyLITE HiLITE) | NZ$5,176 (Mighty Deuce) |
| 13–27 Apr 2027 | NZ$725 (JUCY Cloudbreak) | NZ$2,270 (MightyLITE HiLITE) | NZ$3,107 (Mighty Deuce) |
| 8–22 Jun 2027 | NZ$511 (JUCY Cloudbreak) | NZ$1,207 (MightyLITE HiLITE) | NZ$1,762 (Mighty Deuce) |
Two things stand out. Season matters more than brand: the same hi-top cost almost four times as much in January as in June. And November was nearly sold out of small vans three weeks ahead, so the cheapest thing left was a bigger van. Book spring and summer early. Every route and season is on our New Zealand campervan hire prices page. For a company-by-company daily rate with our price beside each brand’s, see cheap campervan rental in New Zealand.
Our automated check covered JUCY, Star RV and the thl brands (Mighty, MightyLITE, Britz, Maui, Apollo). Escape, Spaceships, Travellers Autobarn and Lucky were not in that sample, so we don’t print a price for them below.

Which company suits which traveller?
Spaceships: best for drivers 18 to 20 and one-way trips
Spaceships rents to drivers from 18 with no young-driver fee and does not charge for one-way hires between its Auckland and Christchurch depots. Unlimited kilometres, bedding, a kitchen kit and 24-hour roadside help are included. The catch is the bond: $5,000 to $7,500 on Basic cover, so most people take Partial ($30 to $50 a day) or Stress-Free ($40 to $60 a day, $0 bond). Its Beta 2S Self-Contained and Sigma have fixed toilets and green warrants; the plain Beta does not.
JUCY: the lowest prices we found, and Queenstown depots
JUCY was the cheapest bookable campervan in most of our seasonal checks, and it is the only budget brand with a Queenstown airport depot as well as Auckland and Christchurch. The 2-berth Crib takes drivers from 18 and includes linen and towels, but it has no toilet and is not self-contained. For freedom camping, the Chaser has a fixed toilet and shower and is certified. Excess on the Crib is $3,000 on basic cover, $1,500 for $35 a day, or $0 for $50 a day.
Escape: cheap cover and unlimited kilometres
Escape’s top cover, “No Worries Mate”, is $30 a day for drivers 22 and over ($35 for 18 to 21) and takes the bond to $0 with windscreen, tyres and gravel roads included. That makes its all-in price easier to predict than most. It runs Auckland to Christchurch one way, with a fee of up to $300. Its S/C and S/C Plus vans are listed as self-contained with a toilet; ask Escape to confirm the van carries a green warrant before you plan free camps.
Travellers Autobarn: long trips on a budget
Travellers Autobarn takes drivers from 18 to 80, includes unlimited kilometres, and its $0-bond Protection Plus is $30 to $35 a day. One-way fees and minimum hire lengths vary by season, so get a quote for your dates. Its van pages list a portable cassette toilet. Under the current rules only a fixed toilet counts for certification, so confirm a green warrant before relying on freedom camping.
Mighty and MightyLITE: cheapest hi-tops
The MightyLITE HiLITE was the cheapest 2-berth hi-top on our Christchurch return in every season it was bookable: NZ$1,207 for 14 nights in June, NZ$2,270 in April, NZ$4,675 in January. The Highball, Double Down, HiLITE and DeLITE take drivers from 18. Mighty is part of the thl group with Britz, Maui and Apollo, so its one-way fee is already in the quoted total. The Mighty Deuce was the cheapest motorhome with a toilet and shower in three of four seasons.
Britz, Maui and Apollo: newer, bigger and dearer
These suit couples on a longer trip who want standing room, a newer van or a shower on board. Drivers must be 21. Britz charges $200 one way Auckland to Christchurch from April to September and $300 from October to March. Reducing liability to $0 (the High Road) is $55 to $65 a day on Britz. Maui’s basic cover leaves up to $7,500 per incident.
Star RV: motorhomes you can drive on a car licence
Star RV’s Polaris 2, 4 and 6 have an integrated toilet and shower and green self-containment certificates. In mid-November the Polaris 6 was the cheapest motorhome left on all four routes we checked from Christchurch, Queenstown and Auckland, from NZ$3,395 for 14 nights.
Lucky: low bond, check the toilet
Lucky’s cover is among the cheapest: $3,000 excess at no cost, $1,500 for $20 a day or $0 for $30 a day. It charges $349 one way southbound. The 2-berth Rodeo is not self-contained and has no toilet; the Roadie has a fixed toilet and is certified.
Camplify: privately owned vans
Camplify is a marketplace, not a rental company. Owners set the price, age limit and rules, so every listing is different. It can work for a return trip from a smaller town, but one-way hire is rare and drivers under 25 face an extra $600 excess.
Can you freedom camp in a rental campervan in New Zealand?
Only in a certified self-contained van, wherever a council or national rule requires it. Since 7 June 2026, only vans with the green self-containment warrant count, and blue warrants are no longer valid. Rental companies had to move their fleets to the green warrant from 7 December 2024. To be certified, a van needs a toilet that is permanently fixed and usable inside the vehicle, plus fresh and wastewater tanks; a portable toilet no longer qualifies (Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board).
Freedom camping in a non-self-contained vehicle where self-containment is required carries a $400 infringement fee (MBIE). Plenty of holiday parks and DOC campsites take any van, so a cheap van without a toilet is still fine if you budget for sites. Our free camping in New Zealand guide has the details.
