Kakadu rewards effort. The plunge pools worth swimming sit behind 4WD tracks and hot walks, and the views worth having sit on top of escarpments, which is why this three-day camping tour advertises itself for the fit and active, and means it.
It opens with a wildlife cruise on Corroboree Billabong, then gets to work: 4WD in to Jim Jim Falls (Motor Car Falls if closed), the gorge swim at Maguk, Gunlom Falls, and the hike up to Gunwhardewharde Lookout above Burrungkuy (Nourlangie Rock) and its ancient galleries of Indigenous rock art. Ubirr caps it off, floodplain views running clear into Arnhem Land, from beside paintings tens of thousands of years old.
Darwin pickup, park fees, fresh meals and camps with actual toilets and showers are all included; you sleep in safari tents or swags with pillows and sheets (sleeping bag hire $35). Groups of 5 to 16, BYO cans only. Earn your swims.

Pick-up is at 6:30 to 6:45am from your accommodation in Darwin. First stop is a wildlife cruise on Corroboree Billabong, a great place to see crocodiles and plenty of birdlife in their natural habitat. From there you drive into Kakadu National Park and stop for a picnic lunch near the East Alligator River, where you might spot crocs and flying foxes. Next is Ubirr in the north of the park, home to some of the best rock art in northern Australia. Your guide explains the paintings and what they mean, and the climb to the top rewards you with 360 degree views over the Nardab floodplains and into Arnhem Land. Tonight you camp at an exclusive safari camp at Mardugal Billabong in the heart of Kakadu, with an open campfire, a cool drink and toasted marshmallows. Walking: about 3 km. Meals: lunch and dinner.
After breakfast it's a 4WD drive to Jim Jim Falls. A 1 km walk through the gorge, beneath sandstone cliffs up to 200 m high, leads to a plunge pool for a swim, or you can relax on the beach and take in the views. If access is closed you visit another of Kakadu's natural attractions instead: the Yurmikmik region of southern Kakadu, which includes Motor Car Falls and offers walks to waterfalls, swimming holes and panoramic viewpoints. After lunch you head to Burrungkuy (Nourlangie Rock) to learn about the Dreamtime stories and rock art of the region and what they mean to the traditional owners. A hike up to the Gunwhardewharde lookout gives you views across the woodlands to the Arnhem Land escarpment, Burrungkuy and Anbangbang Billabong. A visit to the Warradjan Cultural Centre adds insight into the traditional owners of Kakadu through interactive displays and demonstrations. You then return to the safari camp at Mardugal Billabong to relax around the campfire after dinner. Kakadu National Park has closed Jim Jim Falls for the 2026 dry season, so departures during this period visit the Yurmikmik region and Motor Car Falls instead. Walking: about 5 km. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
After breakfast you head to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). A 1 km hike through a paperbark forest, with some rock scrambling, leads to a plunge pool for a cool swim in pristine surroundings. Next is Gunlom Falls in the southern end of Kakadu, where a hike to the top is rewarded with a swim in the natural infinity pools and panoramic views of southern Kakadu. The bottom plunge pool is not to be missed, and a last chance to relax before the drive back to Darwin via the historic town of Pine Creek, arriving at about 5:30pm. Walking: about 3 km. Meals: breakfast and lunch. Itineraries can change with weather, seasonal conditions and transport timetables, sometimes at short notice, so be ready for changes to the route.
