Overview

Flying Adelaide to Melbourne takes an hour and shows you nothing. This takes three days and shows you the Grampians and the Great Ocean Road, which is the right trade. It's a small air-conditioned group with a driver-guide who does the commentary and the hard kilometres.

Day one crosses the Adelaide Hills and the Victorian border (Pink Lake at Dimboola if time allows) and gets straight into the Grampians: a hike down to the base of MacKenzie Falls, then the Balconies and Boroka Lookout before a night in Halls Gap. Day two climbs to the Pinnacle lookout, then heads for the coast via Tower Hill, an extinct volcano busy with wildlife and rich in Aboriginal history, and a group dinner in Warrnambool. Day three is the Great Ocean Road proper: the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge, a rainforest walk in the Otways, lunch in Apollo Bay and the surf beaches on the run into Melbourne.

Two nights' shared accommodation, two breakfasts, two dinners (guest participation), national park fees and about 6.5 kilometres of guided walking are all included. Kangaroos, koalas and emus tend to turn up along the way, though they keep their own hours.
