Adelaide to Perth is a road most people fly over. Done properly it's ten days and about 4,000 kilometres of red dirt, roadhouses and some of the least-crowded coastline in the country, in a 20-seat air-conditioned bus with a guide who knows the stories.
The route goes north through Mount Remarkable National Park, across the Eyre Peninsula (optional sea lion and dolphin swim at Baird Bay, surf lesson at Streaky Bay), then onto the Nullarbor: the Bunda Cliffs dropping into the Southern Ocean, a bush camp with no facilities and a sky full of stars, the 90 Mile Straight. Western Australia answers with two nights at Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand, where the kangaroos lounge on white sand, then the Stirling Ranges, the Granite Skywalk, Greens Pool and the Giant Tingle Tree.
The last stretch goes hands-on at a raptor rehabilitation centre, tastes its way round Margaret River, and finishes with a Wadandi cultural walk and a didgeridoo echoing through Ngilgi Cave before Busselton and Perth. Nine nights in swags (eight with basic facilities, one bush camp), nine breakfasts, three lunches, eight dinners and all park fees are included.

Leave Adelaide early and head north through regional South Australia towards the Yorke Peninsula. Grab a coffee and stretch your legs at Wallaroo, then roll on through small coastal towns to Port Germein, home to one of the longest timber jetties in Australia. By late afternoon you reach Mount Remarkable National Park in the Southern Flinders Ranges, all rugged peaks, ancient river red gums and wildlife coming out as the sun drops. Set up camp at Mambray Creek, go for a short bushwalk and roll out your swag for the first night under the stars.
Wake to the bush and tackle the easy Davey's Gully hike, with views across Spencer Gulf and the ranges. Continue west to Kimba, famous for its giant silo art and community spirit, and spend time at Workshop26, a former tractor shed turned creative space full of local art and handmade goods. Lunch is made by the Kimba hospital auxiliary and Royal Flying Doctor Service support volunteers, with proceeds going to remote health services. By sunset you reach the off-grid Coodlie Park Farm Retreat, with optional stargazing under some of the darkest skies in Australia.
Start early for the optional Baird Bay swim with wild Australian sea lions and bottlenose dolphins, heading out by boat into a sheltered bay. Nothing is fed and nothing is staged: the sea lions are fast and curious and the dolphins cruise past nearby. If you sit it out, you relax around Baird Bay until the group regathers. After lunch, spend two hours with local instructors at the Streaky Bay Surf School, whether it is your first time on a board or not, then continue to the outback town of Penong.
Today you begin the crossing: long straight roads, huge skies, red dirt and low scrub to the horizon. Pose at the famous camel, kangaroo and wombat road signs, then stand at the Bunda Cliffs where the outback drops straight into the Southern Ocean. Stop at the Nullarbor Roadhouse and cross into Western Australia in the afternoon. Tonight is the most remote camp of the trip: bush camping with no reception and no facilities, just campfire conversation and stars.
Head west along the 90 Mile Straight, the longest straight stretch of road in Australia, with the guide's Nullarbor stories along the way. Pass through Balladonia and Norseman until the red dirt gives way to white beaches and blue water near Esperance. Arrive at Cape Le Grand National Park and set up camp at Lucky Bay, home for the next two nights.
A full day with no long drives. Climb Frenchman Peak, a steep walk over granite slabs, for views across the Recherche Archipelago. Or swim the bays, walk the trails, or stay put on the white sand with the kangaroos. Same camp, second night at Lucky Bay.
Pack up and stop at Twilight Cove for a final swim or coastal walk, then turn inland through farmland and mountain country with a stop in Ravensthorpe. By late afternoon the Stirling Ranges appear, sharp peaks rising straight out of the bush. Camp at a quiet private campground near Mt Trio.
After breakfast, hike in the Porongurups to Castle Rock and the Granite Skywalk, suspended out over the ranges and farmland (a test for anyone with a fear of heights). Then to the coast: The Gap and Natural Bridge near Albany, and swims at Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks when conditions are right. Towards evening, visit the Giant Tingle Tree in the Walpole forests, a massive hollowed-out trunk, before camping among the towering forest at Quinninup.
Spend the morning at the Capes Raptor Centre, one of Australia's leading bird of prey rehabilitation centres, and get involved behind the scenes helping care for injured and displaced eagles, hawks, owls and falcons. Then roll into Margaret River for free time in town, lunch and galleries. In the afternoon, taste your way through handpicked local producers, which may include wineries, distilleries and other artisan makers. Camp in the forest near the coast.
Roll up the swags one last time and join Wadandi custodian Josh "Koomal" Whiteland for a cultural morning on Country: bushwalking, the six Noongar seasons, bush foods, native medicine and traditional fire lighting. Then head underground into Ngilgi Cave, where a didgeridoo echoes through the chamber. Stop in Busselton for a walk along the 1.8km jetty and a final coffee before the run into Perth, arriving around 6pm.

"A few of the many highlights: Whistling Caves near Streaky Bay sounded like an ogre roaring through the rock fissures; Cape le Grand National Park – a sea eagle over the headland and amazing lighting effects as the sun peeked through the rain-clouds over the turquoise sea; a family of emus in the sweet bushland of the southern Flinders Ranges; the granite peaks of Castle Rock in Porongorup National Park."

"Camping in the Outback was a real adventure. In addition to impressive hikes, we were also able to discover some small villages. The organization went absolutely smoothly, from start to finish."
