Melbourne to Darwin is the big one: the whole country from the Southern Ocean to the Timor Sea on sealed roads. You climb the Grampians, pass through Adelaide and the Flinders Ranges, then head up the Stuart Highway through the opal fields of Coober Pedy to Uluru, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs. The last stretch runs into the tropics, with Katherine Gorge, Kakadu and the waterfalls of Litchfield before Darwin. Long days, huge skies, and a different landscape every morning.

Camp among the giant balanced boulders and watch them turn red at sunset. It's one of the best free-ish campsites in the country.
Day 14

This route is about 5,300 km, roughly 65 hours of driving. Allow at least 16 days; 19 gives you two nights at Uluru, Alice Springs and Kakadu, and four weeks lets you slow down in the Flinders and the Top End.
Yes. This route stays on sealed highways the whole way, including the roads to Uluru and Kings Canyon, so a standard campervan is fine. Only some of Kakadu's back-country falls need a 4WD, and a tour covers those.
Allow 16–28 days. This plan is paced for 19 days with 14 overnight bases. Short on time? Merge two stops. Got longer? Stay on wherever you like it.
Yes. Melbourne to Darwin is a one-way hire, and operators add a one-way fee that varies by season. We include it in your quote upfront.
Most operators require drivers to be 21 or older. A few accept 18 to 20 year olds with a young-driver surcharge. Tell us the youngest driver's age in the quote form and we'll only quote vans you can drive.
The best fits are the hi-top campervan, the motorhome and the 4wd campervan. Tell us how many of you are travelling and we'll quote the right size.
