Overview

Most drop zones give you farmland. This one gives you two glaciers, New Zealand's highest mountain and the Tasman Sea, all in the same 30 seconds of freefall. The Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area is arguably the most scenic piece of sky on Earth, and from 10,000ft you fall through it at around 200km/h with Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers flowing down into rainforest below you, braided rivers running out to the coast and snow-capped peaks filling the frame behind.

Check-in is at 63 Cron Street in Franz Josef village, a short walk from the main road, and the airfield is a short drive from there. Arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your booking time. After the safety briefing and harness fit you meet your tandem master, then fly for about 10 minutes over rainforest, ice and coastline to altitude. The exit gives you up to 30 seconds of freefall, then the canopy opens and you get 3 to 5 minutes of quiet flight back down to the landing area.

Allow around three hours for the whole thing, more if weather slows the schedule. The standard weight limit is 100kg, with jumpers up to 115kg assessed on the day for a surcharge, and the minimum is 35kg. There is no upper age limit, and under-18s need a parent or guardian's consent. Morning slots usually get the calmest, clearest air. Photo and video packages, either an instructor camera or a personal photographer flying alongside, are paid add-ons, and given what is in the frame here they are worth genuine consideration.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

Check-in is at 63 Cron Street in Franz Josef village, about five minutes' walk from the main road. Arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled booking time. From there the airfield is a short drive away and the crew handles that leg.
  • How long does the whole thing take?

Allow around three hours in total. That covers check-in, gearing up, the briefing, the roughly 10 minute flight to 10,000ft, up to 30 seconds of freefall, 3 to 5 minutes under canopy and the landing. Weather and aircraft turnarounds can stretch it, so do not book anything tight afterwards.
  • What are the weight and age limits?

The standard maximum is 100kg. Jumpers between 100kg and 115kg can be accepted subject to the tandem master's assessment on the day, harness fit and conditions, and a surcharge applies. The minimum weight is 35kg. There is no upper age limit, and anyone under 18 needs consent from a parent or guardian.
  • What should I wear?

Think activewear or light hiking gear: comfortable, season-appropriate clothes that let you move freely. Secure closed-toe shoes are required, so no jandals, heels or boots with lace hooks. Leave loose accessories behind. You can jump in prescription glasses or contact lenses, as the goggles fit over glasses.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Wind, rain or cloud can ground the aircraft. If conditions affect safety the operator contacts you about an hour before your slot, and you can reschedule to a better window on the day or another day, or take a full refund if you cannot reschedule. Morning bookings give you the best odds of calm, clear air.
  • Can I get photos or video?

Yes, as a paid add-on. You can choose an instructor camera, a personal photographer who jumps alongside you, or both. If you buy a media package the digital download link is emailed within 24 to 48 hours of your jump.
  • I have a medical condition. Can I still jump?

The crew are not qualified to give medical advice, so if you have any concerns get clearance from a doctor before you book. Suitability is also assessed on the day at check-in.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancel more than 48 hours before departure for no charge. Cancel less than 48 hours before and 100% of the price is charged. If the operator cancels for weather or operational reasons, it will try to reschedule or substitute, otherwise the unused portion is refunded. Changes after issue may incur a price difference and a reasonable admin fee. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
