Overview

This is a 13,000ft tandem jump over Auckland's west, 45 minutes from the city, and the reason it beats the inner-city options is the view: both the east and west coast beaches, Waiheke Island, Great Barrier Island and, on a clear day, Mt Ruapehu far to the south. You are strapped to an instructor, so your only jobs are to hold on and keep your eyes open.

You arrive at the base in Parakai, get weighed on commercial scales (clothing and shoes count), sit through the safety briefing and gear up. The aircraft is a 17-seat PAC750XL, so a whole hostel dorm can go up together. The climb to 13,000ft is a 15 minute scenic flight over coastline and bush, then up to 45 seconds of freefall at around 200 km/h before your instructor opens the parachute for the glide down. A hand-cam package films the plane ride, exit, freefall and canopy; the top package adds an outside camera flyer. Footage lands in a cloud gallery within minutes of landing.

Allow three hours from your booking time; it often takes less. Weight range is 30 kg to 100 kg, there is no age limit, and under 18s need parental consent. Wear comfortable weather-appropriate clothes and lace-up sneakers. Spectators get a viewing deck with seating and free parking. It runs year round, and the crew will reschedule you at no cost if the weather turns.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

The base is at West Auckland Airport in Parakai, about 45 minutes' drive north-west of Auckland city. Turn up at your booking time and allow three hours for the whole thing. Weather can change fast, so check your skydive status before you leave town.
  • Is there a weight or age limit?

You need to be between 30 kg and 100 kg, weighed on arrival with clothes and shoes on. There is no age limit for the 13,000ft jump; anyone under 18 needs parental consent, and kids must be at least 30 kg for the harness to fit. Pregnant people cannot jump, and you must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you have a medical condition, check with your doctor first.
  • What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable clothing suited to the weather and lace-up trainers or sneakers. No heels, sandals or thongs. All the jump gear is provided, including goggles, and you can wear glasses or contact lenses. You cannot take anything with you on the jump, including your own camera or GoPro, so use the free lockers.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Skydiving is weather dependent and the crew makes the call on the day. If conditions are not suitable they will help you reschedule at no extra cost, and they refund if you are leaving Auckland and cannot come back.
  • What costs extra?

Photos and video are not included. Every package is filmed on the instructor's hand-cam; the top package adds a separate camera flyer for outside shots of your exit and freefall. Food, drinks and insurance are also on you.
  • How do I get there without a car?

Parakai is 45 minutes from Auckland city and the drop zone has free parking if you drive or carpool. Transport from the city is sometimes available depending on capacity, so ask us when you book and we will confirm what is on.
  • Can my friends come and watch?

Yes. There is a viewing deck with plenty of seating where they can watch you land, and parking is free.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
