Overview

Akaroa is a French-influenced harbour village inside the flooded crater of an extinct volcano, and the drive in over the rim is half the point. This is the independent version of the day: a guide gets you there and back the scenic way with the stops and the stories, then hands you about four hours to do Akaroa on your own terms, no cruise or attraction tickets bundled in.

You leave Christchurch in a small group on a Mercedes Sprinter or similar, with the guide pointing out city highlights on the way out. The first stop is Little River, 25 minutes to stretch your legs and grab a coffee at the township at the foot of the peninsula. From there the road climbs to the Summit Road, where you pull in at viewpoints with panoramas over Banks Peninsula and the bays below, then drop down into Akaroa to see the lighthouse and the harbour. After that the time is yours: the waterfront, the shops, the heritage buildings and the eateries along the main street. Lunch is included. The route home runs via Takamatua, Robinson's Bay, Duvauchelle and Gebbies Pass, with views back over Christchurch as you come down.

It is an 8 hour day from Christchurch, with bottled water, Kiwi snacks, Wi-Fi, USB charging and commentary on board, and the operator runs it as a carbon neutral tour. Walking is light and at your own pace in the village. It suits anyone who would rather wander than be herded, and it leaves the dolphin cruise and the Giant's House out so you can pick your own afternoon.

Common questions about this trip

  • How much free time do I get in Akaroa?

About four hours. That is enough to walk the whole waterfront, eat, poke around the heritage buildings and shops, and still sit by the harbour for a while. The guide tells you when and where to meet the van for the drive home.
  • Does this include the dolphin cruise or the Giant's House?

No. This is the independent version, built for people who want to explore Akaroa on their own. The same operator runs separate versions with a harbour nature cruise, a dolphin swim or the Giant's House bundled in, so pick the one that matches what you want to do.
  • What's included on board?

Lunch, bottled water and Kiwi snacks, Wi-Fi and USB charging, and the guide's commentary for the whole trip. The vehicle is a Mercedes Sprinter or similar, so it is a small group rather than a coach.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Not very. The stops are short walks to viewpoints and the free time in Akaroa is at your own pace on flat village streets. Comfortable shoes are all you need.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

The tour runs in most weather, since the viewpoints, village and lunch all still work in the rain, and the operator decides on the day if conditions make the Summit Road unsafe. Bring a rain jacket and a warm layer, because the crater rim is exposed.
  • How long is the day?

About 8 hours from Christchurch and back. Pick-up details are confirmed by the operator when you book.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. "The pickups were on time, and we had a very nice tour guide who gave us a lot of informative and insightful commentary through the way, and we learnt so much, which we would have ofherwise missed out on had we driven the route ourselves."
