Overview

The Coromandel has two beaches everyone talks about, and this day hits both. You leave Auckland in a modern minibus with a guide and no more than 16 others, cross the Waikato farmland and climb into the Coromandel Peninsula, with scenic stops for short walks and photos among white sand beaches and native forest.

At Hot Water Beach, spades are provided so you can dig your own pool in the sand where geothermal water rises through the beach around low tide, then let the waves cool it off. The water underground can be hot enough to scald, so mix in seawater and test before you sit down. The beach also has a strong rip near the offshore rocks, so swim only between the flags. From there it's Hahei and the walk to Cathedral Cove, 30 to 45 minutes each way on a coastal track with big views, ending at the rock arch that made it one of the world's top 50 beaches. Access is weather dependent: after heavy rain the track can be unsafe and the operator arranges alternative stops. Secret stops and your guide's stories fill the drive home.

It's about 12 hours from central Auckland with a minimum of 4 and maximum of 16 people. Spades, water and snacks are included, plus a booster seat for kids 7 and under. Bring swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes, and wear closed-in footwear for uneven tracks. Expect real walking and a reasonable level of fitness. Hot Water Beach is only included on dates where the tide timing allows a proper visit; on other dates an alternative tour runs.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where is the pick-up and how early should I be ready?

Pick-up is from selected central Auckland hotels and meeting points, chosen when you book; if yours is not listed, pick the nearest point. Your confirmation shows the exact time. Be outside a few minutes early, since the day is built around the tide at Hot Water Beach.
  • What should I bring and wear?

Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes for Hot Water Beach, closed-in shoes with grip for the uneven Cathedral Cove track, sunscreen, a rain jacket and a charging cable for your camera. Spades, water and snacks are supplied.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably fit. The Cathedral Cove walk is 30 to 45 minutes each way on a coastal track with climbs and steps, plus short bush walks at the scenic stops. Digging a hole in wet sand is a workout in itself.
  • Does the tour always visit Hot Water Beach?

No. The hot water is reachable around low tide, so Hot Water Beach is only included on dates where the tide timing allows a proper visit. On other dates the operator runs an alternative tour, so check which version your date is before you book.
  • What happens in bad weather?

The tour goes ahead in most weather, but access to Cathedral Cove depends on conditions: the track can be unsafe during or after heavy rain, in which case the operator arranges alternative stops. If the operator cancels the whole day for safety, a full refund is issued.
  • Is Hot Water Beach safe for swimming?

Treat it with respect. The beach has a strong rip, particularly around the offshore rocks, and people have drowned there. Swim between the flags only when lifeguards are patrolling, and test your dug pool before sitting in it, since the geothermal water can be hot enough to scald.
  • Can children come?

Yes. Children under 7 must be in a child safety seat by law, and a safety or booster seat is supplied. Infant fares cover under 4s and child fares ages 4 to 14. Keep kids close at Hot Water Beach because of the hot sand and the rip.
  • Is there a toilet on the bus?

No, but there are frequent comfort stops, and both Hot Water Beach and Hahei have toilets. Hot Water Beach also has cold showers to rinse off the sand.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
