Overview

The TranzAlpine is the train everyone tells you to ride, and this one-way day uses it for what it is good at, crossing the Southern Alps, then hands you to a guide for the part a train cannot do: the West Coast's beaches, gorges and lakes on the way south to Franz Josef. Your bags ride the mini-coach across the Alps while you ride the train.

The day starts with a transfer to Tower Junction to board the TranzAlpine. You settle into the panoramic carriages and climb through the Waimakariri valleys and Arthur's Pass, then down into the rainforest side. At Greymouth your guide meets the train and you get an hour for lunch at a local pub from a set menu, included. Then it is the road: five minutes at the Cobden Breakwater, 30 minutes in Hokitika for the driftwood sign and the black-sand beach, an hour at Hokitika Gorge for the turquoise water, swing bridges and native bush, and a photo stop at Lake Ianthe before the final run into Franz Josef, where your guide drops you at your accommodation.

It is about 12 hours door to door. Groups are capped at 16 in a modern Mercedes mini-coach, and water and snacks are complimentary. You can bring one large bag up to 25kg plus a 7kg day bag. The train is run by a third party and delays of up to 30 minutes happen, so the road leg flexes to suit. The walking is light: beach, gorge track and viewpoints. Accommodation in Franz Josef is not included, so book your bed before you go.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I start the day?

The day begins with a transfer to Tower Junction, the Christchurch rail terminal, to board the TranzAlpine. The operator confirms your exact pick-up point and time when the booking is made, and pick-ups cover central Christchurch including the Bus Interchange.
  • What happens to my luggage while I'm on the train?

It rides on the mini-coach, which your guide drives across to Greymouth to meet you. You are allowed one large bag up to 25kg (no more than 158cm in total dimensions) and one small bag up to 7kg. Extra pieces attract a surcharge and must be arranged in advance.
  • Is this a return trip?

No, it is one way. You finish in Franz Josef and your guide drops you at your accommodation there. Accommodation is not included, so book your bed in Franz Josef before you travel.
  • How much walking is there?

Not much. The beach stroll in Hokitika and the swing-bridge walk at Hokitika Gorge are the longest, and both are on formed tracks or sand. Sensible footwear and a rain jacket are the operator's advice, because the West Coast earns its reputation for rain.
  • What if the train is late or the weather turns?

The TranzAlpine is run by a third party and delays of up to 30 minutes are possible, so the road leg adjusts. In the rare case the operator has to cancel the tour for safety because of weather, you receive a full refund.
  • Can children come?

Yes. Children under 7 must travel in a child safety seat, which is a legal requirement in New Zealand, and anyone 14 or under needs an accompanying adult aged 18 or over. Mention ages when booking so the seat is arranged.
  • What's included to eat?

Lunch in Greymouth from a set menu at a local pub, plus bottled water and snacks on the mini-coach. Breakfast before the train and dinner in Franz Josef are on you. Tell us about any food allergies when you book.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
