Overview

Doubtful Sound is the Fiordland fiord most day trippers skip because it takes a lake crossing and a mountain pass just to reach the water. This trip does the whole chain from Queenstown in one go: glass-roof coach to Manapouri, boat across Lake Manapouri, coach over Wilmot Pass, then a 2.5 hour cruise through the Sound with a nature guide, and all of it in reverse to get home.

The coach leaves Queenstown at 7:30am from the visitor centre at 88 Beach Street or the Frankton bus shelter, with accommodation pickups on a list at booking. It is 2.5 to 3 hours to Pearl Harbour at Manapouri. From there you cruise across the lake to West Arm, climb by coach through rainforest over Wilmot Pass and drop to the fiord. The cruise runs 2.5 hours through the remote waterways of the Sound with the guide on commentary: the history, the plants, and whatever turns up, often fur seals, sometimes bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins. Licensed bar and snacks on board, big glass windows inside for the rain.

It is a daily departure and about 13 hours door to door, and the 2.5 hours on the water is the part you keep. Lunch is not included: pre-order a picnic lunch by 8pm the day before or bring your own. Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, non-slip shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where does the coach pick up and when?

It departs Queenstown at 7:30am from the visitor centre at 88 Beach Street by Steamer Wharf or from the Frankton bus shelter on Kingston Road near the BP roundabout. Accommodation pickups are on a list at booking; add your accommodation name so the driver knows where you are. Your confirmation shows your exact pickup and time, and the coach leaves on time.
  • How long is the day?

About 13 hours. It is 2.5 to 3 hours by coach to Manapouri, then the lake, the pass, 2.5 hours on the Sound, and the same back.
  • What should I bring?

Warm layers and a waterproof jacket, non-slip shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent for the sandflies, a camera, any personal medication, and lunch if you have not pre-ordered one. The fiord is cooler than Queenstown.
  • Is lunch included?

No. Pre-order a picnic lunch when you book, which closes at 8pm the day before, or bring your own. There is a licensed bar and snacks for sale on the fiord boat.
  • Will I see wildlife?

Fur seal sightings are reasonably common, and bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins are regulars. They are wild and not guaranteed; the nature guide looks for them the whole 2.5 hours.
  • What happens in bad weather?

Fiordland rain is heavy and frequent and the operator runs in it: that is when the waterfalls go. The boat has a big indoor lounge with glass windows. The trip is weather dependent and the operator decides on the day.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Not at all. Coach, boat, coach, boat, with short walks between them. It suits any age.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
