Overview

Doubtful Sound is longer, deeper and far quieter than Milford, and it takes three legs to reach, which is exactly why it is quiet. This is the day trip that starts at Manapouri rather than Queenstown, so you skip the long coach ride and get the good bits: the lake, the pass and the fiord.

Check in at the visitor centre at 64 Waiau Street, Pearl Harbour, on the Manapouri lakefront. The first leg is a 45 minute cruise across Lake Manapouri to West Arm. From there a coach climbs 45 minutes over Wilmot Pass through Fiordland rainforest and drops to the fiord. Then you board a purpose-built catamaran and cruise the length of the Sound and its arms, with a nature guide on commentary. Fur seal sightings are reasonably common; bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins show up when they feel like it. Big glass windows inside for the rain, which is when the waterfalls come out, and a licensed bar with snacks and drinks. Then the pass and the lake in reverse.

It departs daily from Manapouri, 30 minutes from Te Anau and 2.5 to 3 hours from Queenstown, and you need your own way to the lakefront. Lunch is not included: pre-order a picnic lunch by 8pm the day before, buy from the café at Manapouri before you leave, or bring your own. Suits all ages. Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers, non-slip shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

At the visitor centre at 64 Waiau Street, Pearl Harbour, on the Manapouri lakefront, at least 30 minutes before your departure. Manapouri is about 30 minutes drive from Te Anau and 2.5 to 3 hours from Queenstown, and there is no transport included on this version, so allow for that.
  • What should I bring?

A waterproof jacket and warm layers, because the fiord is cooler than the lake and Fiordland rain is heavy. Non-slip shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent for the sandflies, a camera, any personal medication and your lunch.
  • Is lunch included?

No. Pre-order a picnic lunch when you book, which closes at 8pm the day before, or buy something at the café at Manapouri before departure, or bring your own. The boat has a licensed bar and sells snacks and drinks.
  • Will I see wildlife?

The operator says fur seal sightings are reasonably common, and bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins are regulars. Nothing is guaranteed; the nature guide looks for them the whole cruise.
  • What happens in bad weather?

Rain is normal in Fiordland and the operator treats it as part of the show: the waterfalls run hardest in a downpour and mist on the water is its own thing. The boat has a large indoor lounge with big windows. The trip is weather dependent and the operator decides on the day.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Not at all. It is boat, coach, boat, with short walks between them. Any age.
  • Is there a toilet and is seasickness a problem?

Doubtful Sound is sheltered fiord water rather than open sea, and the boat is a purpose-built catamaran. Bring your usual remedy if you are prone. Toilet details are not published; the lake and fiord boats are large passenger vessels and there are stops at Manapouri and West Arm.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
