Overview

Ski planes land on snow, and that is the point. You fly out of Aoraki Mount Cook Airport, up the Tasman Valley and over Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, then the pilot sets the skis down on the Tasman Glacier, the longest glacier in New Zealand, and shuts the engine off. For 10 to 15 minutes the only sound is wind and your own boots in the snow.

The 45 minutes runs like this: lift-off from the airstrip on the valley floor, then the sweep up the Tasman Valley with the milky blue of the glacier lake below and the tussock and bush giving way to rock and ice. The Southern Alps close in on both sides and Aoraki/Mount Cook, the highest peak in the country, sits at the head of it all. Then the landing: the plane slides to a stop on the glacier, you climb out into the quiet, take your photos with the aircraft and the peaks behind, and fly back down the valley to the airport.

Check in at the airport on State Highway 80, about 6km before Mount Cook Village. Wear warm layers, long pants, sturdy closed shoes and bring sunglasses, because the snow glare is serious. There is generally an individual weight limit of 116kg, children of all ages are welcome, and the flight runs seven days a week, weather permitting. If the weather is unsuitable the operator reschedules or refunds in full.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

At Aoraki Mount Cook Airport on State Highway 80, about 6km (under 10 minutes' drive) before you reach Mount Cook Village. Your check-in time is in your booking email, and the operator's terms require you to report at least 30 minutes before departure. You may be weighed at check-in for the aircraft's weight and balance.
  • What should I wear?

Warm layers: long pants plus a light sweater or jacket, and sturdy closed-toe shoes for walking on snow. Sunglasses are essential because of the glare off the glacier. Bring your camera or phone.
  • Is there a weight limit?

There is generally an individual weight limit of 116kg. If you are over that, let us know when you book so the operator can confirm seating.
  • Can children and babies fly?

Yes, children of all ages are welcome. Infants can travel on a caregiver's lap, but a seat is still allocated and charged for in line with Civil Aviation Authority requirements, and the adult must use the infant belt provided.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

The pilot decides on the day. If conditions are unsuitable the operator works with you to reschedule or gives a full refund. Most flights also need minimum passenger numbers, and if numbers are not met the operator reschedules or combines flights.
  • Which glacier do you land on, and for how long?

The Tasman Glacier, the largest in New Zealand. The landing is 10 to 15 minutes within the 45 minute flight, and the engine is shut down while you are out on the snow.
  • How do I get to Mount Cook without a car?

The airport is on the only road in, State Highway 80, 6km before the village. Transport to the airport is not included, so arrange it as part of your Mount Cook plans.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
