Overview

Godley Head is 30 minutes from Christchurch, set along the rim of an ancient volcanic landscape on Banks Peninsula. This small-group walk follows the cliff-top trails with sweeping views over the Pacific, Pegasus Bay and the harbour itself.

Along the way you pass the WWII coastal defence gun emplacements and Scott's Cabin, a link to Christchurch's Antarctic history, with an eye out for seals, dolphins and native birds. Your guide fills in the volcanic and human story as you go, and fresh fruit and trail snacks are handed out on the way.

It's about 4km over 2.5 hours on well-formed tracks with 185 metres of climbing, rated easy. Pickup and drop-off are free within 5km of central Christchurch, with departures at 8am and 1pm. You keep the stainless steel water bottle.
