Overview

This is not a scenic cruise. Jet sprint boats are built to go flat out round tight corners, and this is the only 4-seater commercial one in the world: a professional driver up front and three passengers behind. It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 2.5 seconds, and the corners pull up to 4 g. The boats are built by 7-time World Jet Sprint Champion Peter Caughey, and the course is purpose-built: a tight loop of channels around a series of islands in the Gibbston Valley.

You check in at the base on the Gibbston Highway, sign the waiver, and get kitted out in a sturdy helmet and spray jacket. The safety briefing comes next, then you are strapped in. The driver runs three separate rotations of the track, each one a blur of hard acceleration, flat-out straights and corners that stack you against your harness. The whole session is 15 minutes, with around 10 of them on the water, which is exactly as long as your neck wants.

It runs from the Gibbston Valley, on the highway from Queenstown towards Cromwell, and transport is not included: a paid shuttle leaves central Queenstown twice daily (9:15am and 1:15pm from Athol Street, 9:30am and 1:30pm from the Frankton bus interchange) for a minimum of two people. Minimum height is 1.2m and maximum weight 125kg. Pregnant passengers cannot ride, and neck or back injuries are assessed case by case at booking. Enclosed shoes are essential. It goes ahead in rain; the crew assess anything heavier on the day.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where is it and how do I get there?

The base is at 2696 Gibbston Highway in the Gibbston Valley, on the road from Queenstown towards Cromwell. Transport is not included. A paid shuttle runs from central Queenstown twice a day, leaving Athol Street at 9:15am and 1:15pm and the Frankton bus interchange at 9:30am and 1:30pm, with a minimum of two people. Self-drive is straightforward if you have a car.
  • Are there height, weight or medical limits?

Minimum height is 1.2m and the maximum weight is 125kg. Pregnant passengers cannot ride. Neck and back injuries are assessed case by case, so flag them when you book. Everyone signs a waiver before riding.
  • How long does it take?

The session is 15 minutes, with around 10 minutes on the water across three rotations of the track. Add time for the waiver, helmet and spray jacket fitting and the safety briefing. If you take the shuttle from Queenstown, the morning or afternoon run sets your timing.
  • What should I wear?

Enclosed shoes are essential. Comfortable, casual clothes underneath, and the operator recommends warm waterproof clothing and outdoor footwear in cooler months. A sturdy helmet and spray jacket are provided.
  • What happens if it rains?

It runs in the rain. Anything more serious is assessed by the crew on the day, and the operator decides whether to go ahead. The boat is a wet ride regardless, which is what the spray jacket is for.
  • Can I get photos or video?

Photo and video packages are available to buy on the day. Both hands are busy holding on for the 10 minutes on the water, so leave the phone with your bag.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
