Overview

Kakadu is the size of a small country, layered with tens of thousands of years of living culture, and the worst way to meet it is from row 14 of a coach. Colours of Kakadu caps the group at eight, centres the whole itinerary on Indigenous people, places and culture, and includes everything down to the flight.

The two days stack the park's finest: the Guluyambi Culture Cruise on the East Alligator River, croc-patrolled Cahills Crossing, the Warradjan Indigenous Centre, the Nourlangie rock art walk, sunset at Nawurlanja, and a sunrise Yellow Waters cruise when the wetlands are at their absolute peak. Accommodation, guide, transport, park passes and cruises are all wrapped in, it's genuinely all-inclusive, minus alcohol and a little catering.

It's an 18–39 trip with four to eight guests, which means questions get answered and schedules can bend. This is the deep-cut Kakadu most visitors never see.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Day 1 · Fogg Dam, Guluyambi cruise and Arnhem Land sunset

An early start gets you out to greet the sunrise over the dynamic Adelaide River floodplains. Breakfast is at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, a haven of wetlands, floodplains, woodlands and monsoon forest packed with birdlife, reptiles and mammals: breakfast with the birds and coffee with the critters. Then it is on to the edge of Kakadu and Arnhem Land for the award-winning 90 minute Guluyambi Cultural Cruise, wildlife spotting and hearing stories from a local Aboriginal guide on a river with one of the highest populations of estuarine crocodiles in the world (keep your hands in the boat). Lunch overlooks the infamous Cahills Crossing, then you head to your hotel for a swim in the pool or a short nap. In the evening, wander down to Nawurlanja as the setting sun lights up the ancient Arnhem escarpment in shades of ochre, then back to Jabiru for dinner.

2 Day 2 · Yellow Water, Warradjan and Nourlangie

Up before the birds to join the world-renowned sunrise Yellow Water Billabong cruise at Cooinda, the perfect way to watch the wetlands wake up and learn about the ecosystem from a local guide. Enjoy a full buffet breakfast at Cooinda Resort, then take your time in the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, with stories, images, crafts and art, and, seasonally, the chance to sit with female elders and learn string making and weaving. Next up are Anbangbang Billabong and Nourlangie, where a wealth of ancient Aboriginal rock art adorns the sandstone, with lunch by the billabong. Back at Jabiru, a 30 minute scenic flight puts the whole of Kakadu in perspective from 2,000 ft. Depart Jabiru around 3:30pm and be back in Darwin around 7pm. The itinerary can change on the day for environmental and cultural reasons.

"We visited several rock art sites, an escarpment overlooking Arnhem Land, and also had a river cruise from Cahill's Crossing upriver to see the crocodiles."

"The highlights included visiting amazing Aboriginal rock paintings and meeting local indigenous artists and guides. The boat trip to see crocodiles up close won't disappoint."
