Overview

Kakadu is a three-hour drive from Darwin and too big to wing it, which is the whole point of a guided day. You leave from selected inner-city Darwin pick-up points in an air-conditioned mini coach with an accredited outback driver-guide, and the day is paced around short walks rather than long ones (about 2km on foot in total).

The morning starts at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, a wetland full of magpie geese, white-bellied sea eagles and water pythons, and a known spot for saltwater crocodiles. After a lunch stop at Corroboree Park Tavern (lunch is at your own cost), you visit the Bowali Visitor Centre for an introduction to Kakadu's culture and country, then Cahills Crossing, where you look for crocodiles from a safe viewing spot, conditions permitting.

The day finishes at Ubirr, with a guided walk through one of the world's best-preserved rock art galleries and views over the floodplain. If Ubirr is closed, the guide swaps in Nourlangie Rock (Burrungkuy). From November to April the route can change with rain and road conditions, and the guide finds like-for-like stops. You are dropped back at your Darwin accommodation that evening.
