Overview

Three days on Kangaroo Island in a group of 4 to 15, with a storyteller guide and an air-conditioned coaster bus. You leave Adelaide on a 6.30am transfer to Cape Jervis, cross to Penneshaw on a 45-minute ferry, and meet your guide on the island.

Day one is a choice: an optional two-hour marine safari to swim with wild dolphins or seals (extra cost), or a walk along the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail, a honey farm tasting and a visit to a eucalyptus oil distillery. Afternoon is a winery visit with ocean views, then your eco-campsite, Happiness, with private access to Antechamber Bay. You sleep in a swag with facilities on site. Day two is a 45-minute ranger-led tour at Seal Bay, then Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park. Day three covers Cape Willoughby lighthouse, a beach clean-up at Pennington Bay, the 500 steps up Prospect Hill, a swim at Kingscote Jetty and the 5.30pm ferry, reaching Adelaide around 9pm.

The operator changes the flow of the itinerary between seasons (more beach time in summer, more wildlife focus in cooler months), but the inclusions stay the same. A compulsory fuel levy of $10 per person per day is listed as an extra.

"It was a packed three days in which we toured the island and saw some breathtaking things: Remarkable Rocks, Seal Bay, and a swim in the southern ocean were my standouts but I also loved sleeping out, the meals we prepped and ate together, and driving along in the bus seeing how the island is recovering from the fires."
