The Kawarau is the easier of the two Queenstown rafting rivers, and a good first go at whitewater. Four grade 2 to 3 rapids give you plenty of splashing, and the calmer stretches in between let you swim, cliff jump or just look around. You float under the historic Kawarau Bungy Bridge, through the Gibbston Valley wine region and Lord of the Rings country.
The finale is the 400 metre Dog Leg Rapid, on New Zealand's largest volume commercially rafted river. The trip takes 4 to 4.5 hours in total, including a 25 minute drive to the start. The cliff jump is optional.
The minimum age is 13, with a minimum weight of 40kg and a maximum of 120kg, and you need to be able to swim confidently. Pregnancy and heart conditions rule you out. Bring swimwear, a towel and warm clothes. Cameras are not allowed. The season runs October to mid December.
