Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is the largest salt lake in the Southern Hemisphere and the lowest natural point in Australia, 15 metres below sea level. Most years it's a blinding white crust; on the rare occasions it fills, it becomes the country's biggest lake and the birds arrive in thousands. This safari shows it to you from the air, then spends the rest of its time in the Flinders Ranges, whose southern peaks are 600 million years old.
Day one runs north from Adelaide through Port Germein, Pichi Richi Pass and Quorn to Warrens Gorge for rare yellow-footed rock wallabies. Day two is the big one: a six-hour scenic flight over Wilpena Pound, the gorges, the Marree Man and across Lake Eyre, landing at William Creek for lunch at the pub, then home over the Painted Hills, the Andamooka opal fields and Lake Torrens. Day three goes underground in the Blinman copper mine, then through Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, where the creek beds hold Ediacaran fossils.
The last day heads back to Adelaide past red gum forests and over Goyder's Line, with a flight of five wines at Seven Hills Cellars, the first winery in the Clare Valley, built by Jesuits in 1851. You stay three nights at Wilpena Pound Resort, sharing a motel room or in a single, as you choose. Group size tops out at 16, and dinners are at a restaurant at your own cost.

North via Port Wakefield and Port Germein, with its long wooden jetty, then the Southern Flinders Ranges and the views over Spencer Gulf. Through Pichi Richi Pass to the outback town of Quorn and its old Ghan station, then Warrens Gorge to look for yellow-footed rock wallabies, and across the Willochra Plains.
Take off from the local airstrip over Wilpena Pound, Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, then north past Parachilna, the Leigh Creek coal fields and the Marree Man to cross Lake Eyre. Land at William Creek for lunch at the pub, and fly home over the Painted Hills, the Andamooka opal fields and Lake Torrens. The flight path can change to take advantage of better views.
Drive through the Northern Flinders Ranges to Blinman, the highest town in South Australia, and go underground on the copper mine tour. Then Bunyeroo Gorge and the creek beds of Brachina Gorge, with their Ediacaran fossils, a picnic lunch and Razorback Lookout. Kangaroos, emus and wedge-tailed eagles are usually out in the late afternoon.
Down the eastern side of the ranges through the red gum forests and across Goyder's Line into farm country. Lunch at a country cafe or bakery, then a flight of five wines at Seven Hills Cellars in the Clare Valley before the run back to Adelaide.

"It was fabulous. The scenery is amazing and everything was so well organised, it made the trip super easy and comfortable. Staying at Ikara Wilpena Pound was magic - beautiful place and comfortable accommodation. … Highlights were the day travelling through Brachina Gorge and seeing yellow-footed rock wallabies, the flight over Kati Thanda Lake Eyre, and the incredible scenery in our outback region."

Tripadvisor review
"The Flinders Ranges make for a terrific destination to visit from Adelaide. You get stunning scenery, old mining towns as well as interesting wildlife and plants. … My highlight was probably the 2-hr roundtrip hike up to the rim of Wilpena Pound with stunning views at the end. The kangaroos grazing outside my tent in the morning was a close second."
