Overview

Everyone else is on the road at dawn. This departure lets the rush get ahead of you, so the Milford Road and the fiord are a little less crowded when you arrive, and you are not setting an alarm for the dark. Same route, same cruise, later start.

You follow the shore of Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau, then into Fiordland National Park with photo stops at the Eglinton Valley, Knobs Flat and Mirror Lakes and short walks in the beech forest, with the driver-guide's commentary the whole way. At Piopiotahi / Milford Sound you board a cruise boat built for looking: large windows throughout, a top deck for 360 degree views and skipper-controlled HD cameras that put the outdoor footage on screens inside when the rain comes in. You cruise past fur seals on the rocks, dolphins on the bow wave if they feel like it, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin in season, finishing with the boat nosed into the spray of Stirling Falls.

Tea and coffee are complimentary on the cruise and there is a cafe bar on board for everything else. Pickups are free from central Queenstown and along Frankton Road, and the whole day takes about 12 hours. Bring layers, a rain jacket and insect repellent; the walks are short and optional.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I get picked up?

Pickups are free from stops in central Queenstown and along Frankton Road. Tell us where you are staying when you book and we confirm your closest stop and time; the later departure means you are not standing at a bus stop before sunrise.
  • How long is the day?

About 12 hours from Queenstown, roughly four hours of driving each way with photo stops, a break in Te Anau and the cruise in the middle.
  • What is the boat like?

The cruise boats have large windows throughout, a top deck for 360 degree views and skipper-controlled HD cameras that project the outdoor footage onto screens inside, so you still see everything when the rain is horizontal. Tea and coffee are free and there is a cafe bar on board.
  • What should I bring?

Layers and a rain jacket (Milford averages well over six metres of rain a year and the waterfalls are best in it), comfortable shoes for the short walks, sunscreen, sunglasses and insect repellent for the sandflies.
  • How much walking is there?

Very little. The stops along the Milford Road include short optional walks in native bush, and the rest of the day is on the coach or the boat.
  • What wildlife might I see?

New Zealand fur seals on the rocks are the regulars, bottlenose dolphins visit often, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin shows up in season. Kea sometimes work the Homer Tunnel car park. Sightings are never guaranteed.
  • What costs extra?

Anything from the cafe bar on the boat beyond the complimentary tea and coffee, and your own snacks at the Te Anau stop.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
