Overview

This is the Great Ocean Road done in the right direction, west out of Melbourne with the ocean on your left and the Apostles saved for the afternoon, then the Grampians, then Adelaide. Three days, a small air-conditioned group, and a driver-guide doing the commentary.

Day one is the coast: surf beaches, wild koalas along the way, lunch in Apollo Bay (southern right whale season runs June to September, so keep an eye on the water), a guided rainforest walk in the Otways, then the shipwreck coast, the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge before Warrnambool. Day two visits Tower Hill, an extinct volcano crawling with emus and kangaroos, then heads north into the Grampians for the afternoon hike up to the Pinnacle lookout and a group dinner in Halls Gap.

Day three starts early with the walk to the base of MacKenzie Falls, the Balconies and Boroka Lookout, then it's west past Dimboola's Pink Lake and over the border to Adelaide, arriving around 7:30pm. Two nights in hostel dorms, two breakfasts, two dinners, park fees and about 6.5km of guided walking are in the price.
