Overview

Milford Sound is a long way by road. This trip skips the drive and does the whole thing in about four and a half hours, with a guaranteed window seat over parts of Fiordland National Park you cannot reach any other way. Flights run 364 days a year, weather permitting, from the operator's office at Remarkables Park in Frankton.

You are collected from most central Queenstown accommodation by courtesy shuttle, then fly west over the lakes and ranges with pilot commentary. At Milford Sound airport you either take the shuttle or walk the short 15 minute nature trail to the terminal, where a modern catamaran is waiting. The cruise runs beneath the waterfalls and right to the base of Mitre Peak while the skipper covers the history of the fiord and you watch for dolphins, fur seals and penguins. Your pilot escorts you to and from the boat and meets you at the end for the flight home.

Departure times vary by season, with morning and early afternoon flights. Tea and coffee are provided on the cruise and food is available to buy on board. Parking at the office is free if you are driving yourself. Children are 3 to 13 and infants up to two years and 15kg fly free on a parent's lap, and passenger weights are taken at booking so the aircraft can be loaded correctly.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where does it leave from?

From the operator's office at Remarkables Park Town Centre in Frankton, next to Queenstown Airport. A courtesy shuttle collects you from most central Queenstown accommodation if you do not have a car, and parking at the office is free if you drive.
  • What time are the departures?

Flights run in the morning and early afternoon, with times that change by season. Allow about four and a half hours for the whole experience including the transfers; we confirm your exact departure and pickup time with the booking.
  • Are there weight or age limits?

Passenger weights are collected at booking so the operator can plan the aircraft load, and heavier passengers are flagged to the operator in advance. Children are aged 3 to 13. Infants up to two years old and 15kg fly free on a parent's lap.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Flights operate 364 days a year but only when the weather allows, and the operator decides on the day. If your experience is cancelled by the operator for weather or anything else outside your control, you receive a full refund.
  • Is food included?

Tea and coffee are included on the cruise and food is available to buy on board. Nothing else is included, so eat before pickup if you want a proper meal.
  • What should I bring?

A warm layer and rain jacket for the open deck, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent for the sandflies at Milford, plus a charged camera. Keep bags small: it is a light aircraft.
  • Do I have to walk the nature trail?

No. At Milford Sound airport you can take the shuttle to the cruise terminal or walk the short 15 minute rainforest trail. Your pilot escorts you to and from the boat either way.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
