Overview

This is the roomy, easy version of the Milford Sound day from Queenstown: a glass-roof coach with a driver who talks you through the Milford Road, then 1 hour 40 minutes on one of the two largest boats on the fiord, built for stability and space. Commentary on the boat comes through an app on your phone in seven languages, so it works for mixed groups.

The coach runs the southern shore of Lake Wakatipu through Kingston, Garston and Athol, across the Waimea Plains to Te Anau for a morning coffee and food break, then up the Milford Road with photo stops and short walks in Fiordland National Park: Mirror Lakes, The Divide, Monkey Creek and the 1.2 km Homer Tunnel before the drop into Milford. On the water you cruise the full length of the fiord past Mitre Peak, Lady Bowen Falls, Stirling Falls and Seal Rock to the Tasman Sea and back. The boat has big indoor lounges with panoramic windows, open decks, barista coffee, a fully licensed bar and toilets.

It is a daily departure and a long day, about 12 hours door to door. Pickup is at the visitor centre at 88 Beach Street or the Frankton bus shelter, with a list of accommodation pickups available at booking. The coach has no toilet, so use the stops. The Milford Sound levy is included. Lunch is not: pre-book a picnic lunch box or the buffet, or bring your own. Pack a waterproof jacket, a warm layer, non-slip shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where does the coach pick up?

Two default pickups: the visitor centre at 88 Beach Street by Steamer Wharf, or the Frankton bus shelter on Kingston Road near the BP roundabout. A list of accommodation pickups is offered at booking; add your accommodation name so the driver knows where you are. Your confirmation shows your exact pickup and time, and the coach leaves on time.
  • How long is the day?

Allow about 12 hours. It is roughly 5 hours each way on the coach with stops, and 1 hour 40 minutes on the water. Departures from Queenstown are early morning.
  • What should I bring?

Non-slip shoes or boots, a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent for the sandflies, a camera and any personal medication. Milford weather changes fast, so pack for all of it even on a blue-sky morning.
  • Is lunch included?

No. You can pre-book a picnic lunch box or the onboard buffet when you book (vegetarian and gluten-free options are available), buy from the café and bar on the boat, or pick something up at the Te Anau stop. The cruise has barista coffee and a fully licensed bar.
  • Are there toilets?

On the boat, yes, including an accessible bathroom on the main deck of one vessel. The coach has no toilet, but the driver makes regular stops on the way.
  • What happens in bad weather?

The cruise goes ahead in most weather. Very strong wind is about the only thing that cancels it, and the fiord is usually sheltered. Heavy rain is a bonus: it switches on hundreds of waterfalls that are dry on a fine day. Snow closing the Milford Road is the other thing that can stop the trip, and the operator decides on the day.
  • Will I see wildlife?

Fur seals at Seal Rock are common, and bottlenose dolphins, Fiordland crested penguins, kea and albatross all turn up. They are wild, so nothing is guaranteed.
  • Is the Classic boat wheelchair accessible?

The boats are the two largest on the fiord. One has wider 150 cm ramps that take mobility scooters and an accessible bathroom on the main deck. Flag it at booking so the operator can put you on the right vessel.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
