Overview

Same road, different boat. This is the Milford Sound day from Queenstown for people who want a live nature guide rather than an app, on a character boat with open decks rather than the big stable ferry. The cruise runs two hours, the longest of the day cruises here, and the guides talk the whole way: the glaciers that cut the fiord, the fur seals on Seal Rock, the pounamu in Anita Bay.

The day starts with a 6:45am glass-roof coach from Queenstown along the southern shore of Lake Wakatipu, through Kingston, Garston and Athol, over the Waimea Plains to Te Anau for a coffee and food stop, then up the Milford Road with photo stops and short walks: Mirror Lakes, The Divide, Monkey Creek and the 1.2 km Homer Tunnel. At Milford you board one of two character boats, one with a big rooftop deck, the other built like a trading scow that sets sails when the wind allows. The cruise passes Mitre Peak, Lady Bowen Falls, the 146 metre Stirling Falls, Seal Rock and Harrison Cove under the Mt Pembroke glacier, and heads out to the Tasman Sea when the weather lets it.

Daily departures, about 12 hours door to door, with pickup at 88 Beach Street, the Frankton bus shelter or a listed accommodation. The coach has no toilet but makes regular stops; the boat does. Lunch is not included: pre-book a lunch option or buy from the café. Bring a waterproof jacket, a warm layer, non-slip shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where does the coach pick up and when?

Departure is 6:45am from the visitor centre at 88 Beach Street by Steamer Wharf or the Frankton bus shelter on Kingston Road near the BP roundabout. A list of accommodation pickups is offered at booking; add your accommodation name so the driver knows where you are. Your confirmation shows your exact pickup and time, and the coach leaves on time.
  • What is the difference between Signature and Classic?

Signature is two hours on a smaller character boat with live commentary from nature guides who are out on deck with you. Classic is 1 hour 40 minutes on one of the two largest boats on the fiord with commentary through an app. Same coach, same road, same stops.
  • What should I bring?

Non-slip shoes or boots, a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent for the sandflies, a camera and any personal medication. The weather at Milford changes fast, so bring the lot even if Queenstown is sunny.
  • Is lunch included?

No. Pre-book a lunch option when you book (dietary requirements are catered for on request), buy barista coffee, beer on tap or fresh cabinet food on the boat, or grab something at the Te Anau stop.
  • Are there toilets?

The boat has toilets, with an accessible bathroom on the larger of the two Signature vessels. The coach has no toilet but the driver makes regular stops.
  • What happens in bad weather?

Aside from the Milford Road closing for snow, the cruise goes ahead in most weather. Very strong wind is the only thing that normally cancels it. Heavy rain is welcome, because it brings out hundreds of waterfalls. The operator decides on the day.
  • Will I see wildlife?

The nature guides search for it the whole cruise: fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins, bottlenose dolphins and albatross are all seen, and kea hang around the road. Sightings are not guaranteed.
  • Is it wheelchair accessible?

One of the two Signature boats is wheelchair accessible by ramp (maximum 90 cm width) with an accessible bathroom. The other involves around 20 stairs and is not recommended for wheelchair users. Flag it at booking so the operator puts you on the right boat.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
