Overview

Most Milford Sound trips start in Queenstown. This one flies out of Glenorchy, 45 minutes up the lake, which puts you over the Hollyford Valley and into Fiordland faster than anything leaving town. In 50 minutes you cross the Southern Alps, fly over Mitre Peak and the fiord's waterfalls, land on alpine terrain among the snow, and come home.

You check in at the base on Mull Street in Glenorchy and head to the aerodrome. The helicopter climbs out over the head of Lake Whakatipu and into northern Fiordland: native beech forest, hidden alpine lakes and towering peaks, then the Hollyford Valley running toward the coast. Milford Sound opens up ahead with Mitre Peak standing out of the water and waterfalls dropping off the cliffs. On the way back the pilot puts down on alpine terrain so you can step out among the snow-capped peaks, with a seat swap so everyone gets a window. The route and landing spot are the pilot's call on the day.

Check in 15 minutes before departure. Wear comfortable covered shoes and warm clothing including a jacket, and bring sunglasses and sunscreen. It is a shared flight with minimum passenger numbers, there is no age limit, and every passenger's weight is taken at booking for the helicopter's balance. If the weather stops the flight, no cancellation fees apply and you are offered an alternative flight or the next available day.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

At the operator's base at 35 Mull Street, Glenorchy, 15 minutes before departure, then you go to the Glenorchy aerodrome for the flight. Driving from Queenstown, allow 1.5 hours to be safe.
  • How do I get there from Queenstown?

Glenorchy is about 45 minutes' drive from Queenstown along the lake road. Return transport from Queenstown is available from the operator as a separate add-on; ask when you book if you do not have a car.
  • What should I wear?

Comfortable covered shoes and warm clothing including a jacket; it is cold at the landing site in any season. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a camera and insect repellent.
  • Are there age or weight limits?

No age restrictions, though the operator suggests parents of infants under one check with a GP because altitude can affect young ears. Every passenger's weight is required at booking for the helicopter's weight and balance, and seating is set by the pilot. You are encouraged to swap seats after the landing so everyone gets a window.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Fiordland weather changes fast, and the operator does a weather check one hour before departure that you call in for (details come with your confirmation). If the flight cannot operate, no cancellation fees apply and you are offered an alternative flight or the next available day. The route and landing site are at the pilot's discretion, and minimum passenger numbers apply.
  • Do you land at Milford Sound itself?

No. This is a flyover of the fiord with one alpine landing on the way, so you see Milford from above and step out on the snow in the mountains rather than at the wharf.
  • What costs extra?

Transport from Queenstown, food and insurance. Paying by credit or contactless card on the day attracts a surcharge.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
