Overview

On 10 June 1886 Mt Tarawera erupted, destroying the famous Pink and White Terraces and creating Waimangu, the youngest geothermal valley in the world.

It starts with an off-road 4x4 ride through native New Zealand bush, which drops you at the edge of the crater. From there you walk the rim with your guide, hearing what happened in 1886 and why the landscape looks the way it does, with 360-degree panoramic views.

If you're keen, there's an optional run straight down into the heart of the crater, which is as much fun as it sounds. It's suited to most ages, from 7 up. Courtesy transport runs seven days a week from central Rotorua accommodation and the Rotorua i-SITE, or you can meet at the main car park on Hemo Road.
