Ōkoheriki is one of Aotearoa's last ancient forests, and the way in is by zipline. The Original Canopy Tour covers 1.2 kilometres, launching from a 1,000-year-old rimu and finishing with the forest below you.
You fly six ziplines, the longest about 220 metres, cross two swing bridges and step onto platforms up to six storeys high, with the height and speed building gradually. Guides share the conservation story as you go. Birdsong is returning, and tūī, korimakō and toutouwai often follow groups, so you might even hand-feed a friendly toutouwai.
It runs 2.5 hours, starting with a safety briefing and coaching on the first lines. The group is small, free tour photos are included, and every guest's contribution funds predator control and forest restoration. It suits first-timers and families with kids aged 6 and over.
