Overview

Rangitoto is the largest and youngest of Auckland's volcanoes, and the best way to arrive is under your own power. After a safety briefing and paddling lesson at St Heliers Bay, you kayak across the Waitematā Harbour, where you may see little blue penguins and Cook's petrels.

You pull the kayaks up at Rangitoto wharf and hike for about an hour to the summit, learning the history of the island and the region on the way. At the top you get 360-degree views over Auckland as the sun sets behind the city and the Waitākere Ranges.

Back at the water's edge, dinner and refreshments are included, then you paddle back with your guide in the dark, with the city lights coming on across the harbour. Start times follow the sunset: 2pm from April to September and 4pm from October to April. Minimum age is 14. Rangitoto is pest-free, so check, clean and zip up your gear before you leave the mainland.
