Overview

Rotorua is three hours from Auckland, and this trip handles the drive both ways so you can spend the middle of the day in Te Puia, a 60-hectare geothermal valley with more than 500 geothermal features.

After the drive south you're welcomed by the Māori residents, then a guide takes you on a 90-minute tour of the valley. The headliner is Pōhutu, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, with bubbling mud pools around it. You also see kiwi in their enclosure, watch carvers and weavers at work in the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, and visit a marae.

Pickup and drop-off are in Auckland CBD, and the driver confirms your exact pickup time the day before. The van has air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, water and snacks. Lunch isn't included, so bring something or buy it there. The trip needs at least two people to run.
