Overview

This is a coastal skydive, not an alpine one. From 10,000ft above Motueka you look across the golden beaches, turquoise bays and offshore islands of Abel Tasman National Park, the native forest behind it and, on a clear day, inland ranges and even Mt Taranaki across the strait. You are paired with a tandem master, so there is nothing to learn beforehand.

You check in at the hangar at Motueka Airport on College Street, five minutes from town, about 15 to 20 minutes before your slot. After the paperwork you are fitted with a jumpsuit and gear and briefed by your tandem master. The flight to 10,000ft takes about 10 minutes, climbing out over the coast. Then up to 30 seconds of freefall and a few minutes under the parachute with the whole Tasman Bay coastline laid out below. You don't jump over the park itself, but you see large parts of it from the air. Spectators can watch take-off and landing from the seating area.

Allow about three hours at the drop zone. Weight range is 35 kg to 100 kg with a surcharge for 100 kg to 115 kg, and under 18s need parental consent. Wear comfortable clothes, light layers and closed-toe shoes. The crew flies year round; mornings are calmest, especially in summer when the sea breeze builds later in the day. If the weather isn't safe, your jump is delayed or moved to another day.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

At the hangar on College Street at Motueka Airport, about five minutes' drive from Motueka and 40 minutes from Nelson. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your booked time and allow about three hours overall for check-in, briefing, gearing up and waiting for your flight.
  • Is there a weight or age limit?

Jumpers need to be between 35 kg and 100 kg; between 100 kg and 115 kg a surcharge applies and the crew confirms on the day. Anyone under 18 needs parental consent. Weigh yourself before you book so there are no surprises.
  • What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing in light layers, because coastal conditions change, and closed-toe shoes that lace up. A jumpsuit and all the gear are supplied before you jump.
  • What happens if the weather turns?

Skydiving is weather dependent and the crew decides on the day. If conditions aren't safe your jump is delayed or rescheduled; the team watches coastal weather shifts through the day, which is why mornings are usually the best slots.
  • What costs extra?

Photos and video. Options are the instructor's wrist-mounted hand-cam, a separate camera flyer who jumps with you for wide shots and interviews, or both. Edited packages are delivered within 48 hours. The over-100 kg surcharge, transfers, food and insurance are also extra.
  • How do I get there from Nelson?

The drop zone is about 40 minutes' drive from Nelson and five from Motueka. Drive, carpool or take a bus to Motueka and a short taxi from there. Tell us where you are staying and we will sort the simplest option.
  • Can my mates watch?

Yes. There is an allocated seating area where spectators can watch the plane take off and see you land back on site.
  • When is the best time of year?

It runs year round. Summer brings warmer air and the brightest water colours; the cooler months often have the clearest visibility. On any day, mornings are the calmest.
