Overview

Most skydives get you a nice view. This one gets you Aoraki/Mt Cook, the glaciers, the Southern Alps in every direction and the milky blue of Lakes Pukaki, Ohau and Tekapo, from 10,000ft. The drop zone is Pukaki Airport on State Highway 8 just outside Twizel, not in Mt Cook Village, so it fits neatly into a drive between Christchurch or Tekapo and Queenstown.

You arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your booking, check in at the hangar, get a jumpsuit, harness and gloves and meet your tandem master for the briefing. The flight to altitude takes up to 10 minutes, climbing over Lake Pukaki with the mountain filling the windscreen. Then up to 30 seconds of freefall and 3 to 5 minutes under the canopy with the whole Mackenzie Basin spread out below, landing back beside the dedicated viewing area where your mates have been watching. The operation is Kiwi owned and every jump is CarboNZero.

Allow about three hours all up. Weight range is 35 kg to 100 kg, with a surcharge between 100 kg and 115 kg at the crew's discretion on the day. Under 18s need parental or guardian consent. Wear layers and closed-toe shoes; it's alpine, so it can be cold up top even in summer. It runs year round: summer tends to bring clearer skies, winter brings snow on the peaks. If the weather isn't safe your jump is delayed or rescheduled.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

At Pukaki Airport, 2 Swallow Drive off State Highway 8, just outside Twizel. It is not in Mt Cook Village or inside the national park. Arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your booked time and allow about three hours overall, which covers check-in, briefing, gearing up and waiting for a suitable flight window.
  • Is there a weight or age limit?

Jumpers must be between 35 kg and 100 kg. Between 100 kg and 115 kg a surcharge may apply and the crew decides on the day depending on conditions. Anyone under 18 needs a parent's or guardian's consent, and children under 12 are assessed individually.
  • What should I wear?

Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing in layers and closed-toe shoes. It is alpine, so expect it to be cooler at altitude even in summer. A jumpsuit, gloves, goggles and all equipment are provided.
  • What if the weather is bad?

Skydiving is weather dependent and the crew makes the call. If conditions aren't safe your jump is delayed or rescheduled for another slot or day.
  • What costs extra?

Photo and video packages, the surcharge if you are over 100 kg, transfers, food and insurance. Twizel is a few minutes away for cafes and restaurants before or after.
  • How do I get there without a car?

Most people self-drive, and parking is free. Buses serve Twizel and Tekapo, and from either you need a short transfer to the airfield. Staying in Twizel or around Lake Pukaki works best for a morning jump.
  • When is the best time of year?

It operates year round. Summer usually brings clearer skies and warmer temperatures; winter gives you snow-covered peaks. Conditions vary with the season, so earlier slots give the crew more room to wait out weather.
  • Can friends and family watch?

Yes. There is a dedicated viewing area at the drop zone where they can watch take-off and landing.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
