Overview

Hang gliding is flying at its most honest: a wing, a harness, and a running launch off the side of a mountain. Here that mountain is Coronet Peak, New Zealand's highest commercial launch site, 20 minutes' drive from Queenstown, with the Wakatipu Basin unrolling below you the moment your feet leave the ground. The dropzone has been flying tandems for over 30 years and has taken more than 60,000 passengers off the hill.

You check in at 45 Camp Street in central Queenstown and ride the courtesy shuttle up to the summer launch at Carpark 4 on Coronet Peak. Your pilot straps you in, runs the briefing, and the two of you commit to a short run together until the wing lifts you. From there the flight is yours to shape: tell the pilot you want a gentle, floating glide and that's what you get; ask for the roller-coaster version and hold on. Flights average 10 to 20 minutes depending on the day's conditions, and landing is on wheels at the Flight Park on Malaghans Road, which is the easy bit. The pilot shoots photos and video on a GoPro throughout, bought from them after you land.

Allow one and a half to two hours from check-in to being back in town. It runs September to April. Minimum age is 4, with parent or guardian permission for anyone 18 and under. Maximum weight is 100kg, dropping to 90kg in April and May. Wear shoes with ankle support and dress warmly; it is colder in the air, and gloves and jackets are available on request.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Check-in · 45 Camp Street, central Queenstown

Check in at the desk inside the shop at 45 Camp Street. Check the Flight Status on the operator's site an hour beforehand so you know whether the wind is cooperating.

1 The drive · Courtesy shuttle to Coronet Peak

The shuttle leaves from outside The Station building and takes about 20 minutes to climb to Carpark 4, the summer launch on Coronet Peak.

1 Launch · Harness up and run

Your pilot fits the harness and helmet and briefs you. Then you both run a few strides down the slope together until the wing takes the weight.

1 In the air · 10 to 20 minutes over the Wakatipu Basin

Float or wingover, your call. Flight time depends on the conditions that day, averaging 10 to 20 minutes, with the pilot filming on a GoPro.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

Check-in is at the desk inside the shop at 45 Camp Street in central Queenstown, and the courtesy shuttle leaves from outside The Station building nearby. Check the operator's Flight Status online about an hour before your check-in time to see whether flights are running. Allow one and a half to two hours from check-in to being back in town.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Fit enough to run. The launch requires you and the pilot to commit to a short run together down the slope until the glider lifts. Landing is on wheels, so no running is needed at the bottom. You need to be 4 or older, with parent or guardian permission for anyone 18 and under.
  • Is there a weight limit?

Yes. The maximum weight for hang gliding is 100kg, dropping to 90kg in April and May. Weight is taken including clothing and footwear, and if you are over the limit on the day the flight is cancelled without refund, so be honest when you book.
  • What should I wear?

Footwear with ankle support is required. Dress warmly, because it is colder in the air than on the ground, and gloves and jackets are available on request. You can wear a hat and sunglasses during the flight, and a helmet is compulsory.
  • What happens in bad weather?

Hang gliding is weather dependent and the pilots decide on the day. If the operator cancels for weather you can move to another date or take a full refund. Check Flight Status on their website an hour before check-in.
  • Can I get photos and video?

Your pilot films the whole flight on a GoPro that captures you, the pilot and the scenery. The package includes 30 to 40 photos and 2 to 3 videos and is bought directly from the pilot after you land.
  • When is the best time to fly?

Tandem hang gliding from Coronet Peak runs September to April, through spring, summer and autumn. Summer launches use Carpark 4 on Coronet Peak, and the weight limit drops to 90kg in April and May.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancel 48 or more hours before departure; between 48 and 24 hours a 50% refund applies, and under 24 hours no refund is given. Missing check-in means no refund. If the operator cancels for weather, the flight can be moved to another date or fully refunded. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
