Overview

Rotorua smells like sulphur and looks like another planet, and Te Rā is the guided way to see the best of it. Entry to Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley is by guided tour only, so this is the ticket: 90 minutes with a kaiārahi, a Māori guide, who walks you through the valley and passes on the stories, traditions and heritage of the people who have lived on this ground for centuries. You get the geology and the whakapapa in the same breath, which is the point.

The route runs past geysers, bubbling mud and native bush to Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. Pōhutu erupts up to 20 times a day, and the operator is upfront that an eruption during your slot cannot be guaranteed, so stay near the viewing area while your guide talks. From there you visit the Kiwi Conservation Centre, where a kiwi lives in a specially designed nocturnal enclosure, and finish at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where students train in weaving and in wood, stone and bone carving and you can watch them work.

Tours leave from the valley entrance on Hemo Road, a few minutes from central Rotorua, with hourly departures through the day. Check in 15 minutes before your time. This is a guided tour only: transfers, food and drink are not included, so eat before or after. It runs rain or shine, the paths are wheelchair accessible and complimentary wheelchairs are on site, so the fitness bar is low. Bring a raincoat, because this is Rotorua.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

Check in at the valley entrance on Hemo Road, Rotorua, 15 minutes before your tour time. Bookings must be made in advance and your confirmation shows your slot. Tours leave hourly through the day.
  • Will I see Pōhutu Geyser erupt?

Probably, but it is not guaranteed. Pōhutu erupts up to 20 times a day, and the operator states plainly that an eruption during your tour cannot be promised. Stay near the viewing area while the guide talks and you give yourself the best odds.
  • What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable shoes and a raincoat or umbrella. The operator recommends bringing your own wet weather gear because the tour runs rain or shine. There is no food or drink included, so eat beforehand or bring water.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Not very. The valley paths are wheelchair accessible and complimentary wheelchairs are available on site. It is 90 minutes of easy walking with stops.
  • What happens if it rains?

The tour goes ahead. The operator runs rain or shine, and the geothermal steam looks better in cool, damp air anyway. Bring a raincoat.
  • How do I get there from central Rotorua?

The valley is on Hemo Road, minutes from the city centre. Transfers are not included. A city bus runs every 30 minutes until 6pm from central Rotorua to the gate, and there is free parking if you drive.
  • Can children come?

Yes. Child tickets cover ages 5 to 15 and infants are free with a paying adult. The kiwi enclosure is dark and quiet, so keep little ones close.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
