Overview

If you want treetop ziplining without a half-day commitment, this is the fast version. Two ziplines through the native forest canopy on the gondola hill above Queenstown, then a 21 metre drop to the forest floor to finish, and the whole thing is done and dusted in about an hour. It is pitched at people who want the thrill without the time, or who want to test their nerve before signing up for something bigger.

You check in at the treehouse at the top of the gondola, where the crew fits your climbing harness and helmet. Then it is a 10 minute uphill walk along the Tiki Trail to the first platform. Two guides run every tour, one on the launch platform and one at the landing, and between lines they talk you through the forest, the local area and the native species the conservation work here protects. The second zipline leads straight into the finale: a 21 metre controlled drop to the bottom of the forest. From there it is a short uphill walk back to the treehouse where you started.

The tour itself runs 45 minutes to an hour, with a minimum of two and a maximum of ten guests per departure. Minimum age is 6, and the weight range is 20 kg to 125 kg. Closed-toe shoes are compulsory, layers are sensible because it is cooler up the hill, and it runs rain, shine or snow all year round. A gondola ticket is sold separately, so allow 40 to 60 minutes to get from the base terminal to the top before your check-in time, and 90 minutes when the hill is busy.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

Check in at the operator's treehouse at the top of the Skyline gondola at least 15 minutes before your tour time. The gondola ticket is not included, so allow 40 to 60 minutes to get from the base terminal to the top, and 90 minutes during busy periods. You can also walk up the Tiki Trail instead of riding the gondola, which takes 60 to 90 minutes.
  • What should I wear?

Closed-toe shoes are compulsory. Wear layers, because it is cooler at the top of the hill than in town, and in winter dress as if you were going skiing. Cameras are fine if they have a strap, but backpacks cannot be worn while zipping. Small items like wallets and sunglasses can be stored at the treehouse.
  • Are there age or weight limits?

Minimum age is 6, and children aged 6 to 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The weight range is 20 kg to 125 kg. Pregnant guests cannot take part.
  • What happens if it rains?

Tours run in rain, shine and even snow, all year round. The tree canopy gives a fair amount of shelter. Bring a waterproof layer on a wet day.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Not very. The hardest part is the 10 minute uphill walk along the Tiki Trail to the first platform, plus a short uphill walk at the end to get back to the treehouse. The guides handle all the clipping on and off.
  • What costs extra?

The gondola ticket, which you buy on the day at the base terminal or in advance. GoPro hire is available on the day for an extra charge. Getting yourself to the gondola base terminal is on you, and it is a short walk from the Queenstown town centre.
  • How big are the groups?

Each departure runs with a minimum of two and a maximum of ten guests, with two guides.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
